My mate is selling one - but is it overkill for general sailing? Going to sailing in April/May to deliver a yacht from Ipswich to Dublin. Don't mind spending a bit, but is a 'survival suit' overkill?

By most people's standards yes but if you fell in it wouldn't be! Seriously if most of your sailing is in the summer you'll swelter with that thing on but if you regularly ocean race I guess you might consider one. Enjoy your trip!

I have a cheap Fladen Scandia flotation suit on board, it's great on those long cool night passages, as warm as toast even In a cold Northerly wind.

I've got one but have never used it. All I do is move it around different lockers during the season.

It's not the sort of thing to strut around in the marina though. If you had time enough to put it on during a calamity, you might have a better chance of rescue, or alternatively, take a long time to die.

I use a wet suit now to swim in the sea and it's brilliant. Apart from not getting too cold, the extra buoyancy is very welcome.

Very good thing to wear if you are going to be working on deck and/or sailing in cold weather.

1. Front zip better than back zip.
2. 275 kn lifejacket
3. Wetsuit boots or regular cheap short boots
4. You will wreck the seals and need to replace them. Don’t worry about that.

I’ve got the Musto HPX drysuit for when conditions are truly unpleasant and it makes a big difference, no danger of waves finding the gaps between salopettes and jacket, or the top of your boots.

I’ve got a Henri-Lloyd one and my regular crew (my sons) have either H-L or Musto ones. Don’t worry about looking silly in port; you want to put it on after you get under way.

Do practice putting it on and taking it off. It need not take any longer than a jacket and salopettes, but if you don’t practice, you will defer wearing it until too late.

The old back zip type needs a second person to do up the zip.
