Hi Guys

well after what has felt like a life long ambition,i decided to give this sailing lark a go.I went down to ferry meadows and did the RYA 1+2 courses, then biiten by the bug i bought a 26X.I have had the boat in the river nene and im currently doing the dayskipper theory and will be doing the practical in march, then i plan to moor my boat at Wells Harbour.

I just wanted to say hello /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hello bastonjock
It's good to hear from yet another from the Peterborough area
Used to live in Orton Wistow so in spitting distance of Ferry Meadows but now up in Lincolnshire which is more like Baston ( assuming from the name )
Any particular reason why you've picked Wells ?
Nothing against it but the navigation at low water is a bit tricky
Welcome in by the way , it's good to see more joining in
Cheers
Dave

Hi Dave
Thanks for the welcome, the reasons behind me picking wells are that its about the closes access to the sea to Baston that i could find, its in a nice scenic area and at 270.00 for the year on a fore and aft mooring it was what i thought, inexpensive.I did not want to put my boat in a marina costing lots of money.
I decided to buy a trailer sailer and went for a Macgregor 26x,it struck me as being a safe option for a complete novice,if i hit one of those sand banks off of Norfolk the dagger board and rudders flip up.

I may well go for a heavy displacement boat in a couple of years or so,i have acess to a 35ft Raider on the Scottish west coast and once i feel confident enough ill take it out on my own.

are there anyother moorings on the east coast that are good value? my buddies boat costs him 90.00 a year to moor it at Oban.

im a complete novice BTW,my sailing experience is 5 days in Ferry meadows,8 days as crew on my friends boat and six years as a diver on the rigs.Im doing the day skipper course and im glad i did,im off to the Canaries in March to do a weeks practical.

where do you keep your boat?

Welcome to the forum, I hope you enjoy it. The East Coast forum is very polite and full of good advice and local knowledge.
We hope to come to Wells this year as part of our summer cruise.

Welcome to the forum ! Wells is one of my favourites, is it Bob the HM there who just cant do enough to help ?. Having said that, was weather-locked in Wells last year for a week, and the exit in the dark was, now what's the word, ah yes ..... interesting. Good luck with the courses /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yep couple of ace pubs too and new facilities, just watch that depth and when you see the tide right out you will understand why Bob offers to come and pilot first timers in. A great place - I hope it works for you.

Welcome to the forum, I am fairly new and they have been fairly gentle with me.........

Spent a week in Wells last year and couldn't see how folks got a reasonable day sail out at sea. With that tide running, I reckoned that by the time I got out of the harbour, it was nearly time to come back in unless I waited for the next tide - great if the time is right.

Bob was very helpful, even if he did have his joke of mooring me on a hill the first night /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Never occured to me that the mud next to the pontoon might be so steep! We all woke up in a heap at the ends of our bunks heee heee.

ive looked into the tide situation and i can get out at 2 hours either side of HW so as you say,its either a quick 4 hour jaunt at HW or wait for the next tide, the boat that i have is easily beached,so thats another option i suppose /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

this will be my first season,im hoping to decide on what i want to do,i.e will i stick with a mac at wells or go for a proper yacht elsewhere

Be wary about beaching a boat on an exposed bank. It may be calm when you go on, but that's no guarantee of being calm when the water comes back. You may have seen the edition of "Coast" from the Goodwin Sands; calm when they landed, but it took the lifeboat to get them off!
