Good afternoon all - just wanted to say hi!

I bought a Fletcher 19GTS at the weekend. It is my first boat, and I am already looking forward to hours, days and hopefully weeks floating around the Thames.

I must say that this site is an incredibly useful resource, and although I am currrently learning from it, hope to be able to add to it in time.

You seem like a jolly friendly bunch!

I live in Weybridge, and keep the boat in Walton.

Look forward to hopefully meeting a few of you in time.

Howdy mate. Keeping the boat at Walton you will only meet the Riff Raff of the Forum. The more refined are to be found above Henley. The aristocrats above Cleve.

haha... so am I learning by reading the forum... Happy to be part of the riff raff that occasionally visits you aristocrats up where things get quiet!

And the real royalty live in Berkshire, but moor a 40 yr old boat in Weybridge to disguise their true worth and avoid rampant jealousy!

Welcome!

Hello new forumite

You have seen nothing yet, the tidal mob are coming to Kingston for the W E., We will probably be sent to the top end near London River Club as usual, to keep us out of the way.
The submarine we sent last year did nothing to endear us to the hoi polloi. So if you get to Kingston for the week end, come and see the Hooligan Yacht Club (H Y C ).

Well there's no bigger Hooligan than the present Commodore of the London River Yacht Club at Kingston. Like myself a former denizen of "Stringers" otherwise known as the Outrigger and now sadly pulled down. Mind you with Roy Stringer dead and buried there wasn't much point in leaving the pub standing.

Hi Simon, I'm only a visitor to the Thames, brought my boat round from Poole last year.

However I did have a Fletcher 19GTS for 8 years, and have to say that they are great boats, pack a lot in 19 feet. This was mine in Swanage bay.

I do wonder, though, if it's the best boat for the Thames. You'll find, if you haven't already, that the deep V hull will wander at low (river speed) and may be a bit of a handful. Still, I've no doubt you'll have great fun, enjoy.

Thanks all,

Geoffs - Indeed you are right, it can have a tendency to wander, but I actually quite enjoy it.... keeps me busy with stuff to do. Agree, it packs quite a lot into the boat. Was not my first choice to be honest but was let down by a couple of others and decided to just buy what the marine had in stock as I got it for a good price. It is being fully valeted today and tomorrow - cut/compound etc and then on Friday I have a day doing an RYA course in it - so looking forward to that.

More importantly - should be great to get it out on the sea sometime soon!

thanks all for the welcome.

Simon

We just bought our first boat this year and we looked at the Fletchers. Decided in the end that we would not really use the cuddy so we went for a Bowrider instead. It was a Poole based boat, did our Level II Powerboat course down in Poole and have spent the summer either on the Thames (we live near Wargrave and store it there) or drop it in the sea at Poole.

The river and the sea are two completely different experiences. After a day on the river I find I am totally relaxed. The sea is exhilerating and it is good to speed it up but it has been a windy summer so it has been a bit limiting for a small boat.

Enjoy your boat!

Geoffs - just read your post of your epic voyage... sounds fantastic! How did you get that much time to just go off an enjoy yourself - very jealous!

Having read that - would be interesting to learn who from the site lives where on the river - has a map ever been made displaying where we all are?

Hi again, Simon.

One of the advantages of old age, and semi retirement. Took 10 days to get to Byron's and spent a couple of weeks on the river and a week to get back to Poole.

I met 'Forbsie' (Gordon) at Eel Pie, 'Doolittle' (Mike) at Laleham, 'Gavi' (Brendan) at Staines and of course good ol' Byron at South Stoke. I'm sure this is not an exhaustive list of river side forumites, but they all welcomed me with fanatastic hospitality.

A bit about my return trip with snipets from the great people on the river.
