Hello I have a 1970s sealing 215 the steering is very stiff can anyone tell me where the grease/ lube points are thanks

hi..what engine and outdrive is she ? Are you sure she is from the 70's ? any 215 I know of would be from the 80's...turned into the 218 and then the 220. All used the same hull. Power plants were usually 4, 6 or 8 cylinder VP set ups. Some had power steering and some didn't, depending on set up.

On my 218 model (same basic boat but few years newer), she had a VP 4.3 with a 290dp. There was a power steering pump driven off the belt on the front of the engine. This also contained the reservoir for oil too. The steering arm and assembly behind should be greased too. Depending on the outdrive you have…the steering bush has a grease point too. Have a look at these and go from there.

Let’s do a bit of diagnostics.
Is there any free movement in the wheel?
Is there any free movement in the drive if you try and push it side to side?
plus QBhoy’s points
There doesn’t seem to be any free movement at the wheel..the boat is still in the water so I can’t check the drive

I’d say that’s maybe a 200/210 or something like that. 215 is a little different. She will be 80’s I’d think.

Check the cables, I would say. There is a cable running from your steering all the way to the steering arm at the inner transom arrangement. On the outside (if you have access), there will be a steering helmet arrangement too. Check under there (likely a 280 drive SP) too. If you have the ability, disconnect the cables and see if its still stiff to move by hand. Is the boat in or out the water ? is the outdrive tilted up or down and does this make a difference to the stiffness ? Or are you finding the stiffness only when under way ?
