Hello From A Newbie Boater :)

Hello :)

If im frank about it i would have thought twice if i knew grp "oxidises" or rots.

As things are id like to make her sea worthy but if i end up thinking new boat its going to be wood or steel or for far better longevity you cant beat concrete, absolutely great for gardens!! just unbeatable for boats!!.

Which comes off worst in a colllission the grp super yacht or the 1930 concrete built ketch ? bit like a four wheel drive and a cyclist ? no contest :D

grp is not that brilliant on the enviroment or our friends in the sea ?

like i say i wish i knew that before i bought the grp but i will make something of it now unless i can find the type of deal Tarona says for £25 to £30 per week ??

thats sounds a really good idea :)

Hiyaaaaaaa

Can anyone tell me what i can expect to pay for a taxi from cremyll across the tamar bridge to southdown marina ?

right i guess i might be seeing some of you very helpful and very nice people within the next 8 hours, whatever you do today take care and all the best :)

I understand where you're coming from with this, and it is a point of view. I suppose one of the counters to it might be, 'If GRP is so bad, why do GRP boats outnumber non-GRP ones 10 to 1?'

You're right, GRP suffers from osmosis, and that's the nature of the beast. Wood rots, steel oxidises, aluminium dents and concrete is a pain in the arse to work with. On the plus side of GRP, it's easily repairable, and with a few simple and common-sense strategies, it can be the perfect answer. Lightweight, repairable and cheap.

Blue-water sailors may have concerns about whale strikes, but is that really too much of an issue for most of us. And you'd NEVER have got a steel/concrete boat for anything like what you paid for yours. You might have got wood, but that's a whole other can of slithery things...

4x4 vs cyclist? As a daily commuting cyclist, I can tell you the secret of it is not to get hit by anything. It's the same with GRP boats. It's like the classic British suspicion of catamarans - a general worry that if you turn them over, you're screwed. That doesn't seem to concern Polynesia, where cats are the standard, de facto sailing vessel. You just make sure you don't turn them over. Same with GRP. Don't hit anything, and look after it.

Don't be too hard on yourself. You have a boat. That's more than many, and something many aspire to. Good for you. Now, next job: make it something you can sail. When you've done that, make her nice. When you've done that, trade up.

Good luck. Hope you have a blast. I did.

Hello :)

The day i arrived at the southdown marina i could swear a male voice could be herd shouting out "ben" they shouted several times for almost a minute i think but i could not see where from, they could have been calling out from the other side of the water though like i say i could not see them.

I m really sorry if your reading this now and i never meant to cause any offense, i was not ignoring anyone i just didnt know where you were shouting from.

I have what could be serious problem.

Were the motors of these boats provided with layers of asbestos ?

Also were the fire blankets made from asbestos ?

The Dockrell is now on land as of yesterday.

Today i got my electrical connection though i have shivered and frozen during the last 13 nights, very hard to sleep if your too busy shivering!!!

Condensation was so bad i thought maybe thats what caused the boat to sink.

More accurately.......

One very kind family gave me a sleeping blanket about a week ago which was my first decent (albeit broken) nights sleep. The guys name is Terry i thank-you again mate :)

An equally kind gentleman Shuan provided me with two boat fenders, thank-you very much Shuan, a most considerate act :)

This afternoon as i walked back from the local co-op store i heard a car horn, i was a bit surprised to see a small group of young people from the marina looking in my direction offering me a lift back to the marina, however i was not cold and i wanted to walk so i hope they could see i was saying thank-you to them and waved and gave them a smile. Again please dont take offense i certainly didnt mean to offend anyone :)

Many People have been very pleasant inside the Southdown Marina and in Millbrook Town itself.

My stay here to date has been one of being in a community of open and freindly people i thank-you :)

Glad to hear its going ok. Sadly we are no longer at southdown, having launched last Tuesday. I understand the condensation issue and hopefully that will improve as the general temperature increases. Still, its a good feeling when you can see the boat improve. Keep everyone updated.

HI
Congratulations on your winning your boat, I had a Dockrell 22 for 23 years, good little boats. There is an owners association, although not very active. I believe your boat was the last post in the for sale section. If you buy the parts you need second hand at boat jumbles & auctions etc. It should not cost too much to get back in commission but quit a lot of work.
I would simply put an outboard on the back I had a 30 year old Johnson 6hp for a long time, but changed it for an 8hp Mariner 2 stroke with saildrive prop & battery charging which was better.

Hello Robmcg

I hope your voyage is a happy and successful voyage :)

May i ask your plans ? where your salling to ? are we going to see any youtube videos ? and of course no worries if your keeping it under your hat :)

Since suspecting i have asbestos in the engine compartment i have noted the same diamond pattern covers the external grp of the deck, its partially hidden by paintwork though i agree with one of the guys at the marina who works on the boats for a living it appears to be integral to the hull. What i thought may be asbestos is more likely to be the grp. As its around 1 centimetre thick in the engine housing compartment it probably indicates the the boat is an older more solid model ? :)

Hello Gart

Its always going to be good to hear from other far more experinced dockrell 22 owners. Thats interesting about charging the battery ? I must look into that and any further info is very welcome. back home i have two unused 85Ah lucas batteries and an 8000 Wt inverter. I just need to get them here which will be very soon now.

Thanks Ben! No plans for epic journeys this year, but a few trips up and down the coast and across to the Channel Islands, (time and weather permiting). JUst glad the fitting out is over for another year!!!

Hello People

If anyone can get word to Nathan or anyone who can quickly disconnect that electrical cable from the main supply then i am very grateful thank-you.

Dont worry about water running down the cable length itself as i have lowered the cable into the cabin space so it has a "u bend" so it rises to some height again keeping the two sockets on it dry.

I have of course rang nathan though hes not in the office.

Also i just before leaving i have noted two very large and i mean LARGE gas containers placed a few meters away from the dockrell by a static caravan.

This part is not as important as above though if anyone can help me prevent my dockrell cabin getting flooded.

I noted a few days ago the self drainage system of the dockrell out on the deck area was not working, the rain was about two inches deep last time i saw it yesterday.

I am currently away to sort out family matters so its out of my hands right now.

The cabin area is locked and i have the only key though if the drainage holes on deck can be unblocked eveything should be ok.

The electrical cable supplying my boat is plugged in to the external power though no appliances in my boat are plugged into it.

Please let me know on here if possible if its been sorted out and of course i thank-you.
