hello campers... broadening horizons

Hiya, we've bought a decent family sized frame tent after having some good times down Hurst View campsite this year with my family, launching the boat from Lymington. a good combination of open campfire & bbq at night followed by a blast around IOW during the day.

Next year, we'd like to extend the weekend jaunts to a week away somewhere where we'd do the same ass the weekend activities but knowing me, SWMBO and the boys, the above'll start to wear a bit thin after a few days. Does anyone have any recommendations where we can camp out for a week, do the open fire, bbq, boating thing but also have a bit of nightlife and city type amenities close by to have a break from all that fresh air and exercise?

We camped in Fowey at Penmarlam

Great park to explore and a slipway and pontoons. Mind you the slipway is steep! We motored up to central Fowey every night for fun then back late on. Got the peace during the day as well!

Also used Mercury and the campsite next door, Windermere etc

We really like Burnbake Campsite, a couple of miles inland from Studland Bay. You can't launch a mobo at the beach unfortunately, 'cos the National Trust doesn't like it, but there are several places in Poole Harbour and at Weymouth where you can. Lots of nice coastline (and Poole Harbour) to explore within your reach, though there's a speed limit in Poole between October and April (I think).

Burnbake itself is quite laid-back: turn up, pitch your tent anywhere you can and someone will be round to collect money at some point. It can be a bit boggy if it rains, and the lanes to the site are narrow so you'll need to be cautious trailering your fine craft (maybe see if you can leave it somewhere like Rockley instead). Camper vans and tents are welcome but caravans aren't, which is a plus, so far as we're concerned. Because it's run with a light touch there has been the odd occasion where there have been noisy groups on site late at night and no-one to shut them up or evict them. We haven't experienced this ourselves but some friends did, once upon a time. You can have an open fire so long as it's contained in something, and off the ground (we use an old grill pan on a couple of bricks). Facilities are basic but clean and there's a little shop on site which opens in the morning and evening.

You're within driving distance of Weymouth, Poole and Bournemouth if you want some fleshpots, or Corfe Castle and the New Forest if you want some alternative things to do. Probably a bit far to stroll to the beach but if you take bikes you can cycle to Studland so long as you don't mind the odd hill.

I have no connection to the site but it's an easy run for us so we often pop down there for the weekend, on a whim. There's no booking except during the summer bank holiday weekends, when you won't get in unless your name's on the list.

Earlier this evening I was reading a post from someone who could not make up his mind on which boat to spend £350,000 on, and now we have someone looking forward to spending next summer camping and sailing a small boat.

UK for now but we're hoping to trail the boat abroad at some point, possibly later in the year.. and you're spot on with the comments, takes all sorts to make an interesting world to play in

Well, get youselves up here.
Do a Memory Lane thing etc

The slipway at Menai Bridge is 24/7 and recently improved.
Just the job for Your boat and you can sample the Straits etc.
No matter what the weather The Straits are always ok in any weather/wind

Then there are some nice Camp sights near Chester.
As You know only a stones throw away.

For the City bit away from us Painted Celts!

There's campsites between Falmouth and Helford, just behind the beach at Maenporth is one, I think. Don't know how much you'd pay for access to the water at Falmouth, but having launched you might then be able to leave the boat at Durgan, round the corner in Helford. Suspect all mooring charges will be eye watering, the way things have gone round here.

Google map shows some sites in the wrong place, be careful.

When i was in the Upper Hamble Cruising Club [now disbanded] we used to set up tents and barbaque in the field attatched to The Island Harbour Marina just up the river from the Folly Inn on the river Medina between Cowes and Newport I.O.W. We used to plug the karioke into the washroom. Great place to camp and moor within 50mtrs.Just have to check on the times of the lock gates but sometimes on freeflow. Tel.01983822999.
