Need to seal the PL259 (VHF) plug/RG58 (cable) joint from water ingress. Manufacturer suggests self-amalgamating tape, I would prefer to use heatshrink. Any opinions on whether the latter would provide just as good a water seal as the tape?

TIA

Ordinary heatshrink is not waterproof - water will readily wick up between the sleeve and the wire. However, if you get the adhesive-lined variety, and check that the glue has exuded in an unbroken line around each end, then it will be reliably waterproof and as good or better than tape. My only worry would be whether the diameters are close enough even for 3:1 sleeve - PL259 plugs are pretty bulky.

I use good quality 4:1 cross linked thick wall adhesive lined heatshrink on PL259s, and coax joints, as has been said take care that the adhesive forms a good bead to confirm it has sealed.

Wow - I didn't realise such a high ratio even existed :)

It goes up to at least 6:1 Pete, anybody wanting heatshrink products should have a look at the Hilltop products site, they have a huge range, I got some 35mm 4:1 really heavy wall stuff from them for battery cable lugs, when shrunk down it is really thick wall and prvides excellent protection.

I used to use adhesive lined heatshrink for the joints on torpedo guidance wire, good to at least 1000 feet so should survive on the deck of a yacht
