Heating on a targa 40

Hi,

I am in the process of buying a targa 40 in the med and need to add heating when it gets to mainland europe. I would welcome idea's from other forumites on how other boats get the main large size duct from the heater in the engine room to under the floor in the saloon where it is easy to branch out from. I can see a number of options would would appreciate input before I start ripping things appart :) and maybe overlook the obvious.

As we speak (or type) I'm in the process of having a Propex LPG 3.0kw ducted heating system installed on my 27 footer. Looking forward to seeing and feeling the end results- I'll keep you posted
 
Heating - a blank canvas

I'm in the process of restoring an old cruiser (wooden) which will require all new systems. ie water and heat. If you were starting from a blank canvas what would you use? She's 40' with a small cabin forward of the wheel house and a large one aft.
 
Sorry unable to help with the Targa 40, but at the risk of hi-jacking your thread, would be interested in the instal on the 27 footer.

Hi Rob

On my T40 the main duct from the D4 runs high up along the port side of the engine room, then through the bulkhead into the wardrobe in the midcabin, and straight down from there to the subfloor in the mid cabin, thence forward to the saloon and on to the front cabin - all on the port side of the boat. There are two junctions, one forward to a duct going over to the heads, and one on the engine room side of the bulkhead to a duct which heats the cockpit (two outlets).

Boat is in Brighton if you want to come and have a look for yourself, or if you need specific photos, just shout.

I looked at the port side. I'd be interested in some pics on how to get it from the
wardrobe throught the floor and under the subfloor to the saloon. Will PM my email adress. Allthough there is probably room under the subfloor I could not see how to get access to it. It all seems to be one big molded piece. Unless there is a hatch hidden under the carpet.
I did wonder about removing the cubboard insert under the washbasin.

Was yours factory fitted or fitted later?

Hi Rob

Got your PM and I'll get some pics for you during the week. Fyi there is a hatch to the subfloor in the midcabin, it's immediately in front of the door to the cabin. You'll also find the compass for the autopilot there.

Mine was retrofitted by a previous owner.

Aha That makes sense. I'd be interested in the autopilot drive setup also as I don't have one and there are so many drive types out there that it is hard to know which one.

Great stuff, this information is going to save me hours!

Here you go - as requested.

In my boat, the heater is installed above the port fuel tank, relatively close to the forward bulkhead:

This shot is looking forward - you can just see the heater on the left, and the outlet ducting immediately branches, one branch goes forward through the bulkhead into the mid-cabin wardrobe, and the right-hand branch goes across the bulkhead to the starboard side of the boat, where there are two cockpit outlets:

In the mid-cabin wardrobe, the ducting travels down through the outboard side of the wardrobe in front of the heavy-duty breaker box, and down below the floor:

An access hole has been cut below the sofa seat, you can just see the ducting inside:

The heating outlet in the mid-cabin is below the sink:

I suspect, although I don't know this for sure, that the way to get at this is to take the back of the cupboard out below the sink - I don't think you'd need to remove the whole cupboard moulding - in this photo you can see the fixings at the back of the cupboard, and that panel does not seem to be siliconed in, so should be easy to remove:

In my last post I said that you could get to the floor void below the mid-cabin through a hatch just in front of the door. This is where the hatch is:

And this is what it looks like from below - you can see the angled moulding which is the doorframe on the right-hand side of the picture:

However I was wrong to suggest that you could get at the floor void containing the heating duct - you can't, there's a bulkhead in the way.

Hope this gives you what you were after, shout if you need more.

Can't believe you made it into some those places Jimmy, did you find all this when looking for your fluxgate? FWIW. mine too was retro fitted. I think a lot of the boats destined for warmer climes were fitted later, if needed. Those that stayed up here in the cold had them retro fitted simply because Fairline charged £5,500 and the same again if you wanted the screen demister system.

Looking in the mid cabin, I have a spare outlet which was factory fitted on the end of the forward of the two berths but the outlet that is in use is under the little sofa very near where yours is shown.

Having seen the whole installation, I would make 3 recommendations:

1. Get the D5 for a T40, you'll get good heat to all cabins and cockpit.
2. Go for Eberspacker if in UK
3. Think twice about DIY fit. The guys that it do it for a living really know what they're doing, I've looked at several retrofits now and they really do a good job.

Not an obvious route if you don't know the boat.

I will let you know how I get on. completing the deal this week and of to Mallorca to pick the boat up on the 26th.

I thought about DIY fit on my Windy. I can only say thank goodness I didnt. Having seen the installation Webasto did for me, I have no idea how they managed to get to some of those locations.
I m with Roger on this;I really think this is one of those jobs you will wish you never ever started.
