simple question

would the volvo md1 run on heating oil?

before you ask..... I am not planning on doing it for two reasons

1/ it is illegal

2/ I do not want my car to smell of diesel while moving the stuff from the tank behind the house to the tank on the slug

When I worked at an off grid airfield, we ran the genny on heating oil as well as the space heater for the hanger. 18pence /gallon.
Our MD brought his race car transporter in for a paint job. Guy who was stripping it out, called me over to see why the fire extingisher wouldn't come out of it's bracket. It was being used as a filler for the 50gallon red diesel tank under the workbench.........

Very Naughty Dylan

I do hope it is not your intention to run your MD1 on kerosene, unfortunately although it will run quite adequately on C/H oil, the viscosity is slightly too low to efficiently lubricate the injector pump and will, over the course of time, cause a degree of wear to the moving components.

Interestingly though, should you feel the urge to try this as an experiment, the simple addition of the cheapest engine oil you can find ie, 'The Range' budget version about £8.00/5L added at about 1 part oil to 25/30 parts kerosene will ensure that the viscosity and colour are identical to the DERV available at garages for road use.

Obviously I for one cannot condone such practice as it deprives HMRC of the eminently reasonable 85% taxes demanded to enable the construction of life saving devices such as speed cameras etc.

The drawback also would be that as you would only be paying about 50p per litre you may be encouraged to spend more time afloat enjoying the delights of our beautiful coastline and may even pop over to the other side, where the Belgians/French, would be unable to detect your prank even in the unlikely event that your tank were dipped !!

With this in mind I wish you well and urge you to think twice before embarking on such a course of action...:D

Easy to tell who hasnt got oil fired central heating!
Keroscene/Paraffin/aviation fuel are all basically the same and have far less oil in them than diesel.
Keroscene costs in bulk almost the same as Duty free red diesel-around about 70p/litre or thereabouts. Both are taxed/vat at a nominal 5%.
NOTE 70p /LITRE NOT THE £1.50 or so I HEAR SOME MARINAS CHARGE.
You can run your boat on whatever you want so so running on keroscene is quite legal as is running it on vegetable oil.
There is no leglislation listing what you can run on only what you cannot run on and that is red high sulphur diesel.
When I buy my central heating keroscene I sign for delivery against a statement that "this is not to be used on the public highway" or words to that effect.
Its purely by default that because Europe doesnt allow leisure craft to benefit from a fuel sold primarily to commercial operators that the red diesel mess has arisen.
Keroscene does have a tendancy to scour the cylinders but with addition of oil does work quite well-alternatives to engine oil are gear oil and two stroke oil.
But what is the point with only at most a 3p litre saving.

As has been said Kerosene is thinner.
Heating Oil can either be 28 second oil = Kerosene or
35 second = Diesel (coloured red for non road use.)

The numbers relate to the length of time a dribble of the oil takes to travel down a given length of an inclined piece of glass.

North America

I believe that #2 Heating oil in North America is the same as #2 Diesel oil with additives to prevent grunge

probably not so in UK / Europe

Bought 1000l of kerosene C/H oil in December for 43p/litre, just need to shop around a bit, substantially cheaper than red diesel and a saving of 50% minimum over 60-40 marina red.
