Looking for suggestions on a system that could provide heating and hotwater (if there is such a thing) on a 33 footer, currently no heating or calorifier installed, ideally would be diesel fired as the boat will most probably be on a mooring.

Thanks

On a previous boat-a Gib'sea 96-I installed the Webasto thermo top with a big calorifier and radiators. It was magic-25 minutes from start up to hot water and a warm boat.

Then we had a senior moment and sold it................................

I regularly install Webasto Thermo top Cs and Es to do just what you are suggesting and they are very successful when properly spec'ced and loaded right, though mostly with radiators which are a bit of a problem siting on many yachts. You can use heater matrix to create blown air instead of the radiators but they are less efficient. You may have to use the current engine heated calorifier exchanger coil if you only have a single coil calorifier, or change the calorifier to a twin coil model. Do not let anybody talk you into an Eberspacher or Webasto Dual Top or eber equivelant, they produce hot water and blown air but are not approved for marine use as they don't like being tipped.
If you PM me an email address I will send you a PDF copy of the "Wet system" marine install documentation which will answer all of your questions, either that or raise many more you hadn't thought of yet.

Installing the same at the moment....on a tight budget

I have gone for a Rover 75 Webasto :-

2 of these:-

and one of these:-

http://www.surecal.co.uk/Product/SureCal.aspx

£100 all in for the Webasto (£60 + pump, leads etc)
£95 each for the heaters x2
£60 on pipe and fittings T Pieces etc
£320 for the calorifier

It is all nearly connected up, I will let you know what's its like when its finished and how it performs....it goes via the engine too....so can heat boat or water from engine or webasto...and pre-heat engine if needed....might not even work! I will report back as soon as it fires up.

Not a good idea to use the same coolant in the heating & engine, 50% (usually) in engine 15 to 25% in heating as glycol doesn't carry the heat so well, OK for quick warm up on car engines but the heating side will suffer, more so if you are using matrix.

Will have to go for 20% coolant in engine then I guess.
