been nosing through some posts, and while I can see that for taking the chill of early and late season while in the marina, using the shore power and a fan is a cost effective way to go. But how about when under way,in the cockpit? BBQ seems a little dicey to me,and a full system seems rather expensive. Any alternatives?

What about a hurricane lantern or two, they give off a good amount of heat and are very cheap to buy and run /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Light plus heat seems like a pragmatic response but there's a slight problem with any hydrocarbon based fuel as a heater: if the primary ("wet") heat output is not "modified" through a heat exchanger to produce a secondary source of (dry) air, you will put an amount of water into the cabin atmosphere roughly equal to the amount of fuel burned.

The primary heat source should (I hesitate to say "must") be vented directly to outside. Additionally there are by-products of pyrolysis, which can have fatal consequences to yuman beans, as well as causing nasty black marks on the headlining, thus reducing the second-hand value.

In the cockpit underway I think it needs to be warm air blown directly at you, can't see radiator type having any effect. There is a good supply of heat coming from the engine, you just need a way of collecting it. If you're very DIY competent then I guess you could rig up a car type heat exchanger and vents. Quite a few boats have this as standard.

Best bet though I would say is to get hold of a used diesel eberspacher on e-bay for about 250 quid and rig that up, that way you can use it at anchor as well.

I can't believe the prices second hand Eberspachers are making on EBay this year, £250/300+.

I purchased two last for £150, both complete and running 100%. One installed on my boat, the other i use to heat my shed up /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Great heaters, and i guess demand is pushing the prices up.

Have you considered a catalitic heater, had one years ago on a small single cabin cruiser. It was very effective, in either cabin or cockpit. Some now even have their own gas bottle, they are portable and take up little room.
Cannot compete with eberspatcher on a larger cruiser and i would not leave one unattended, but for cheap effective occasional single area use ideal.

Well I have seen 12v electric blankets for sale, you just need one of those multi adapters and all the crew could have one /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
