On the Volvo D1-30, the calorifier circuit connects to the engine at the bottom of the heat exchanger with a brass hose nipple. There appears to be sealant [plumbers paste ?] in the thread of this connection, where it screws into the engine. What would be a suitable spec for this?

I doubt that it needs to be anything very sophisticated, but if you want the best, use liquid PTFE. This stuff is superb and seals almost anything - last week I managed to seal a leak from an ancient O-ring using it, something I would have thought impossible. I believe Toolstation and/or Screwfix sell it.

Otherwise, Boss White or even PTFE tape, used sparingly, will be fine.

Clessetite is the best of the liquid PTFE based products I have used, I have used it for years on most screw fittings and even a tiny bit on olives as it also lubricates and makes the tightening more controllable it is LPG certified which is a bonus. Anerobic so seals well and easy to dismantle too.
