Where can I buy heat shrink sleeving in various diameters by the meter? I need about four meters in total, but in three diameters to fit 6, 10 and 16mm line. Costs a fortune from chandlers if you buy the little pre-cut sleeves in a package. Prefer web supplier or mail order. Thanks.

Cheapest by far I've found (& they're v.handy for other stuff too) is from Beals.:ask 'em for a catalogue

The glue filled stuff is super, btw.

I always use, http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.co.uk/
for all low volts electrical stuff.

always find vehicle wiring products rather dear, except for the japanese bullets which I haven't found anywhere else (except Wurth, but they're not tinned)..........handy for v.small quantities I s'pose.

eg beals 12mm glue-filled h/s :£2.95 per m, VWP: £4.30 per m.

Some of the coloured h/s on sale is junk:very, very thin walled stuff, not at all like the usual gear.

I was about to write that too, way over priced, I have never bought anything from them but still get the catalogue delivered, maybe this explains their costs!

Big range though!

Interesting I've used them a lot in the car days and I've always found that across the board (connectors, switches, wire etc) that they've been the cheapest.
So who else are you recommending, do they have a web-site and/or a catalogue and do they do all the normal wiring bits.
Next job on the agenda is to rewire high power side of my boat so this is significant!

Beals have a website, but it's just a list of products. They're ok for reels of cable, copper terminals/tools & the usual pre-insulated red/blue/yellow stuff + a lot of other workshop consumables.....crimp tools are OK & cheap, fuseholders rubbish (well, the ones I bought went back), h/shrink excellent, they do an excellent butane solder/flame torch with a range of bits, that I wouldn't be without (excellent for lighting fireworks ) & cheap stainless jubilee clips (hi-grip ones)

found asap the cheapest for reasonably flexible battery cable (use their hi-flex stuff) it ain't tinned, but if you slip the glue filled h/s over & plug the inspection holein the terminal....nothing gets in anyway....also good for perko batt.switches & 90 degree copper term's.

Rest I usually buy locally from Furneaux Riddall....durite is good for batt. terminals & splashproof switches (as in the VWP catalogue) + heat-res. split sleeve (for around engines), ripaults now v.cheap for halogen 5W bulbs (1/2 the hella price) & dual contact hella bulbs much cheaper than chandlers, & ok for non-tinned cable + pre-ins. terminals, ripaults muti-way blocks are horrid, use the AMP ones, with the tinned terminals for marine or underbonnet/m-cycle use. also v.v.good prices on sealed lead-calcium batteries last time I was there

Don't think furneaux riddall have a web site, tel no 02392 668621- they do a surprisingly large range of marine stuff, although is much easier at the counter where you can browse all their trade catalogues.

Index marine you know, I expect (they have some 20Amp switches that can be hard to find elsewhere)

Maplin or electrospeed used 2 be best for tinned small dia. cable (1 or 2 mm.sq).

TLC-direct do nice changover switches suitable for shorepower/generator use+ obviously all the 240V gear.

SES express sometimes used too (less so now I like Beals h/s)

Phew! (well you did ask)

Hope that helps ?

Thanks all for your replies. Never realized there were so many different types of shrink sleeves now that I have checked some websites. The kind with thermo-glue inside sound ideal despite the extra cost. Can you still shrink them carefully over a gas hob or do you really need a heat gun (or will a powerful hairdryer do)? Thanks again.

for small stuff, even a lighter/match will do (although the sleeve gets sooty!)

Larger stuff on heavy cables is hard to apply enough heat to shrink w/o melting the cable outer (assuming it's ordinary cable)

Gas stove may be ok,wd not imagine hairdryer to be hot enough, but no harm in trying.

I use a butane gas torch mostly + black/decker hot air gun on high for larger work
