This stuff has a multitude of uses around a boat, but the chandler's selection is often limited and very expensive. Can anyone suggest a more economical source?

I bought a whole box of assorted sizes and colours from Screwfix a few years ago. Well worth having in stock if you're likely to do any wiring.
Any Electrical wholesaler in any town or city. (Try City Electrical for instance, http://www.cef.co.uk/) They sell it in packs and will sometimes split them.
There are usually a few wholesalers on any decent industrial estate.
Try cablecraft - their heatshrink and copper crimps and tube lugs are a fraction of the price of their competitors'. Decent kit - I used their stuff throughout when I recabled the boat completely earlier this year.
Hot air gun, or if you're afloat 'judiciously with a lighter.' I have a little butane blowtorch which does perfectly because it stands on its own base.
