Hi Folks

Can anyone advise on a issue i discovered yesterday. When beating hard to windward in a force 4/5 with about 3/4 rolls in the headsail i am getting what i could only call drumming at the the top of the sail. This happening about 6inchs from the luff and about 2ft down from the head of the sail. There is no vibration at the leach. I have tried halyard tension, moving the car and adjusting leach line tension etc but it does not seem to make a difference. The sail is a bi radial which is 3 seasons old and is in as new condition.

Can anyone advise on this

Thanks

Andrew

With the headsail rolled it can't be halyard tension; so that leaves only a combination of leech, car and backstay. My bet would be backstay on, car forward a bit and play with the leech.
The only other control is a barbour hauler to move the clew sideways.

Failing that it may be a blown bit of sail.....

Insufficient backstay tension or, maybe, resonance at that wind and that angle of the forestay.

Tightening the backstay should work in either case.

3-4 rolls on the foresail will always give you worse perfromance. Get a jib ;-)
