Apple are now supplying their desktop and laptop operating system upgrades free. The latest version OS Mavericks 7 can be downloaded from the Mac App' store now. This upgrade is compatible with previous operating systems back to Snow Leopard 10.6.8.

Apple as with Windows supplies improved operating system versions from time to time. (For example Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8,) (Apple Snow Leopard, Mountain Lion, Mavericks). This will surely mean that Windows will have to follow and offer their upgrades free instead of charging £100+ for each new version. A bold step by Apple!

That threw me as not named after a cat...
So mavericks is the latest os.....
Any good....

I wont be being as bold as with ios... Latest is rubbish....
If my nikon scan and photo software goes tits up i wont be happy. I shall let some info filter through first

One Mac user told me that the snag with updating the Apple OS is that it will give Apple a list of any ripped off software on the machine, which may of may not work afterwards.

Windows is the same in that respect and not only on OS updates - their own software checks it is legit whenever it does an update using "Windows Genuine Advantage".

Free software seems to be the way Apple are going. Pages, Numbers and Keynote are now free on iPads and iPhones.

Haven't done it yet, 'cos I was reading a review which claimed it slowed the machine down, and Apple were working on a fix.

Anyone noticed this said slowdown?

Any other comments?

Re IOS, is the upgrade from 6 to 7 really better? I'm still on 6, but I hear lots of conflicting opinions.
