Heads Inspections

I have heard that on arrival at some ports the authorities want to put a seal on the heads,
and inspect it before departure. This is to ensure that shore facilities are used rather than polluting the marina or harbour.

Has anyone actually been required to do this, and did the port have a holding tank pumpout station and 24 hour access to shore facilities.

I am interested in Northern France and the English South coast.

I know that in Greece and Turkey there is no inspection but penalties for discharging waste are severe.

As far as I know, the only place this applies in the UK is when you enter the inland waterway network covered by the Boat Safety Scheme.

You are then supposed to inform the authorities that you have a marine toilet, as part of the "self certifying" scheme for visitors and they will then seal it for the duration.

Common courtesy dictates that you don't use them in locked marinas etc. though I have seen the occasional floater in places like Hythe... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

In my experience, lumps cannot escape severe maceration, but I guess that depends on your outlet mesh.

But then I only go into marinas if I have to to get fuel. Why live in a caravan park environment when the key benefit of a boat is its ability to go anywhere that the water goes?

When I went through the Caley Canal this year BW didn't even look at the cludgie let alone seal it up. (The leaflet did say not to use it though, and there are facilities at most mooring places. NOT at the Great Glen Water Park, Loch Oich, though, after the pub shuts.)

This topic could start a whole new series of "Where is it?" posts /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have pondered this on many occasions. We use the marina bogs because we are scared of polluting the environment, at least whilst in marinas, which is as infrequently as possible but permanent in winter.

Is it a crime to poo in marinas that are regularly flushed out by tides in a river?

I am certain that many folk do that on the qt, especially the more elderly or infirm boaters.

Interested of SW England!

It's 0300, dark, p**sing down. The curry and those 6 pints of the black stuff are wearing heavy. Are you seriously going to get all togged up in oilies and trudge nearly half a mile there and back or are you going to take the easy option? No brainer I think!
What would you do if caught out on a mountain? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
