Can anyone recommend a 27-28 foot sailing boat on the 2nd hand market sub £15000 that has genuine 6 feet headroom in part of the accomodation.

My Nicholson 26 has 6'1" through out the saloon and heads. It's such a relief to pee without crouching. You can find one for about £10,000

You could look out for a Trapper 500 - I looked at a couple of these some years ago and although you need to be careful with the condition of the decks they were well built and I don't remember a problem with headroom

Jaguar 27, mainly fin keel, 3 layouts, good sailing and from 10k to 13k
or a Contessa 28 - OK for my friend who's 6' - but you will have to beat them down on price to get below 15k - but could be done.
or Westerly Centaur - hundreds around from 9k to 14k

Maxi 84 (28.5ft) - good headroom right through, Im 6'2". Swedish built, about around £15000-18000. Good sailer and seaboat and a good family boat too.

Do you need headroom?

This is your local devil's advocate speaking.

Much is made of headroom by builders and in boat tests, but as a six footer meself, I've often sailed on boats with an inch or two less than that, and find it a benefit, rather than a demerit.

Being able to brace myself with feet on the floor and head jammed up against the headlining sometimes lets you do things two-handed, when a shorter person would be hanging on with one hand and trying to get the lid off the cookie jar with t'other. Damn, he's dropped it, and all the biccies have gone in the gash with bits of broken glass mixed in.

Honestly, an inch or two short is not a problem - more than three or four though and the crick in the neck can become a pain in the butt.

Re: Yeah! do you need a boat?

I agree, all this headroom is totally overated. Get a short boat too, then you can helm from your bed. In fact, to save money on moorings the very best solution would be to have a boat zero feet long, buy a car and drive from marina to marina telling them to get stuffed!

Westerly Centaur - 100s about, very solidly built, a tardis inside, and you should be able to pick up a really good example for £12-13k. Watch out for cracked stringers in the region of the bilge keels particularly if its been on a drying mooring.

Apart from the obvious Centaur and her newer sister the Griffon, I'd recommend a Tomahwk or, like Mike, definately a SABRE 27, they are well built and sail OK unlike most that have been mentioned thus far here. A Jag 27, too would fit the bill, but it depends if you want a fin ar a twin etc.

Viking is right, the Maxi 84 outstanding when it comes to headroom. She is a very well built Swedish cruiser (by Pelle Pettersson), a good sailer in harsh conditions. Not so quick in light weather. Might be hard to find in the UK, but I´ve seen several on the market while surfing British websites. Also one in the current issue of PBO for sale in Totnes.
Check it out.

Bye from a Swedish sailer (the Baltic).
