Hi,

I have two tins of glue for attaching foam backed lining to GRP hulls. The tins have an expiry date on them and the glue is 18 months out of date. I am afraid I currently don't know the type of glue for a fact but I am sure its the same as Hawkhead's SAF111, which is where I bought it from. The tins are 0.75 litres, white colour, not the same as the current offering on Hawkheads site. Does this glue go off such that it is no longer sticky, or maybe it just thickens up too much in the tin. I am not at home but next month I will be doing some headlining work and I considering just buying new glue - I would rather not. Any comments are appreciated as always.

Thanks,

This may or may not be of any help, but many years ago I had to re-stick head lining on a boat. I was given a present of a green tin of what looked very like Evo-stick contact adhesive, but the tin had MOD markings (my pal had army contacts...). It was many years old and I'm sure it would have been well past its date if it had had one. It worked well as an adhesive, but the fumes nearly killed me.

My guess is, this will be a thixotropic adhesive. Yes it does have a shelf life (normally a year) but there's nothing to stop you doing a test with some. Bond a couple of small pieces of ply together and then try to pull them apart. If it bonds them ok it'll be more than good enough to stick foam back vinyl. On the other hand, if you open your tins and it resembles dried gorilla snot... hand in pocket time.
