Word of warning - Hawke House

It may apply to other suppliers too but, had a re-lining job undertaken, partly by a professional and partly by myself and much of the white lining has adopted a greenish tinge where it has interacted with the glue. Both products supplied by Hawke House !!!

Hello All,

I'm just about to start refurbishing my Dad's boat and have this very same problem. A friend's Dad uesd to work on interiors for Jaguar so I'm hoping he'll be able to give me some pointers but do any of you know of some good info on the web where I can have a read up on the do's and don'ts, this is one job I have absolutely no experience of.
The link is of a photo to give you an idea of what I'm dealing with (sorry, don't know how to post photos)

Had the same problem - followed instructions to the letter and all the headlining has a green/yellow tinge. Hawke House have aked for a sample of the unused lining but surely the problem is with adhesive?

Fastened the old stuff back up with D-profile beading from B&Q.

[/ QUOTE ]How did you hold up the beading? Screws into the deckhead?

On the Laurent-Giles Westerlies (Pageant/ Centaur/ Pentland et al) the beading will spring into position clipped above the curtain rails! It really is that simply & elegant a solution. where alloy curtain rails aren't in the right place or not well fastened I used 1/4" six brass countersunk screws. Drill & c/sink the beading then use a bradawl to start the screws into the GRP sandwich. I didn't even bother to paint mine & they still look as tho' they were designed to be there!

Re: Head lining - Green Tinge using Hawke House Adhesive & Lining

I posted earlier this season with the same problem - I bought lining and adhesive from Hawke House on for my Westerly. Followed the instructions (which were quite good), and large areas of the lining has adopted a green tinge as described by Maxi and Kinsale. I rang Alan Dring at Hawke house, and he suggested I had used too much glue. I dont know if this is true, there's no description of how to guage how much to apply in the instructions - but I taking no chances. There are areas which are not affected, so I presume these had less glue on them.

I think the lesson is to spread the glue that is painted on the hull (the one from the big tin) fairly well - you are supposed to wait until it is tacky before spraying and applying the lining. Spreading it around well means it will go tacky more evenly & quicker..... ask Hawke House for some practical guidance as to how much to apply, they are certainly knowledgeable and helpfull.

If it still goes green let us know, then I think we've all been sold a pig in a poke.

I know it's a bit of a lte reply, but thought you might be interested, given the potential cost saving...

Try going into a Dunelm store and look at their range of vinyl coverings. Only about £3 per metre!! Not foam backed admittedly, but they also sell the foam separately (and very cheaply) if you can apply it yourself. Always worth a look!!
And whilst it may seem too cheap to be true,, the quality is excellent - check it out!
The white vinyl they sold in there was exactly the same as fitted to our boat, so perfect for repairs & refurbishment.
Don't pay marine prices if you don't have to!
Good luck!

I got mine from Toomer and Hayter in Bournemouth mainly because they were local(ish) and I could pick it up. Currently, they have foam backed vinyl at £10 per metre inc VAT. When I bought mine, the colour/finish I wanted was being discontinued so I got a discount on it.

The adhesive they supply only needs to be pasted onto the base surface and the foam is then pushed onto that. It was fairly easy (easy being defined as it could have been worse!) and there was no discolouration.

I still need to finish off a bit of trimming but the (nearly) final result is in the picture below.
