If you find yourself, as I did, with a Lowrance HDS gen2 device not booting and/or not reading Navionics SD card at boot and/or not loading software updates (.upd) files from SD cards it might be that you have V2.0 firmware installed.
http://www.bbcboards.net/lowrance-garmin-sonar-gps/376558-ok-lets-talk-update-2-0-gen-2-a-4.html seems to indicate this problem ( bug ) in V2.0 was identified around June 2013 but Navico and Bainbridge in the UK certainly didn't know about it when I called them today for assistance and almost had me dismantling the console and sending the head unit off for an out of warranty repair. Thankfully, Matthew at Lowrance EMEA in Netherlands came to the rescue...
"try holding down the pages button while booting with the update in the SD card slot. This forces the HDS to boot from the SD card and install the update and hopefully alleviate the initial issue. This has been known to help units that are hanging at this stage."
Yay ! It worked, the unit beeped then started the update (to V2.5 in my case) and now the unit reboots normally and reads the Navionics card as it should do.
I hope that saves someone else a similar headache.
