We picked up a mooring bouy at HISC yesterday to put on our sails after being launched. We hade been there a couple of minutes, - clearly struggling to put up the furling main, when a fat guy in a rib came along side, saying, "you can't stay there unless you pay". Surely there are nicer ways of saying this? how about, "will you be staying for long sir?"

had quite a barney with him last year when the engine died coming into chi.. singlehanded i managed to sail to one of thier moorings and pick it up.
5 mins later he turned up.. no interest in my problem.. just wanted money.
I told him where to go, dropped the mooring and drifted with the incoming tide till i could drop the hook.
He turned up again and said he had every right to charge for HISC moorings. I totally ignored him.
Unless its a dire emergency, I shall have nothing to do with HISC ever again.

It may be the Club doesn't know how this man treats people on their moorings, why don't you write to the commodore and tell them? At least one would then know if the whole Club has this man's attitude or not.

I have emailed the Commodore

[/ QUOTE ] You should have written snail mail. Not too late to send a follow up letter. Definitely do that if you do not get an acknowledgement within a few days.

It appears HISC attitudes to brief use of their moorings has not changed in the twenty years since I last visited. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Unfortuantely the yott clube has fallen into the realms of this as a norm.. lots of pretentious twats lording over who has the most expensive.. it is sad, yes.. but look at the lounge here on Saturday nights, check the regulars lol... mostly knobs.... know nowt.. own boat share... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
I am sure there are really good welcoming clubs out there.. but, maybe not.. all seem tarred with the same brush.. and the smaller, the worse (IMHO).. dinghy sailors seem to have more commondores than the rest of them.. Often just a drinking club for wannabees with money...

Ohh! Mr Bardfast! You are revealing your own predjudices now!

SOME sailing clubs may be like that, but I am yet to come across one. Here, in the NW, they are extremely friendly & welcoming & helpful. I have also been welcomed as a guest in other clubs around the country without problems.

I suspect that the incidents above are down to an individual or two. If your experiences in Spain are that poor, perhaps they don't appreciate ex-pats?

Hi Searush, you are correct, it is a biased opinion of small clubs- northwest.. and larger clubs in the solent area.. not a spain thing.. so sorry to generalise, but its how I feel.. the northern clubs DO tend to be (as northerners are) more welcoming.. but unfortunately I do have to emphasise that thevast majority are taken over by slobbish money grabbing cretins who attempt to make them conform to their sad little world of finance and accumulation..

The BEST yott club.. is the people you meet who actually have actually achieved something in a non financial or PMQ blinkered approach to reality... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I generally agree with a lot of what you said which is one of the reasons why I chose not to join one (although I recognise that there are some very welcoming clubs around too) - but I also accept that if I am not a member I can't expect to use their facilities (e.g. moorings) f.o.c. Perhaps it could be nicer put when someone comes to get the fee. Perhaps there should be a better understanding of the bigger picture and how if they are nice to you now you might join later (or spend money at the bar etc). Or perhaps we all take it too seriously and should just shrug our shoulders and move on?

Oh I say Slarty you damn boundah!! you're...you're...Black balled.. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I am probably the last person in the.. Universe who could answer that question /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It seems HISC actually OWN Chi Harbour - or at least the bit between Hayling and Itchenor.

That's certainly the impression members give should you dare try to cross 'their' water when they are sailing.... sometimes seems they are competing for a 'rudest helmsmen of the day' cup! By far the mosy ill mannered people in the harbour - quite unable to manage a race without being rude and inconsiderate to the rest of us.

Look at the X Boat fleet by contrast - always a cheery wave if you are at least trying to get out of the way, (not always possible) and superb helmsmanship the rest of the time.
