Hawk Wind indicator doesn\'t fit my VHF antena ..

having spent out 20 odd quid for a replacement Hawk Windy arrow for my VHf antena ... I now find that it doesn't fit at all ... the boss that carries the tacking angle arms is so big compared to the whip rod diameter ... I need to have the arrow pivoting at least 30cms up antena to miss masthead and anchor light !

So how to fix the tacking angle arms ... the arrow is no problem - that's locked on by using screw block electrical terminals either side ... Doesn't bother me if arms are fitted separately ... from deck level makes no odds ..

Possibly I have missed the point here but are you trying to add the Hawk to an existing non-Hawk VHF? Reason I ask is that Hawk do a combined VHF aerial/wind indicator or they do a wind indicator without the VHF. As far as I know, they do not do a wind indicator to be fitted onto another VHF aerial.

The combined unit that I have comes with an extension arm so it is held clear of the mast head and all the other stuff up there. Hope this helps but not sure if it really answers your question.

Have you been sent the stand-alone wind indicator instead of the VTronix Hawk replacement indicator? I am fairly sure they are different and the stand-alone version does have quite a thick boss.

The only retro-fit Windy I could find was the Hawk job for fitting to a Hawk VHf Antena ...

The Windy I lost was slightly smaller Hawk job and fitted the antena reasonably well - it was the stand-alone one and I discarded the short mast with it. The arrow boss was drilled through to allow the antena to pass through, the boss with the arms fitted reasonably well ... this one though has a much larger boss to take the arms ..

In the instructions I gather it's designed to sit down on the base of the antena on a "spigot" that is about 4mm wide .. 3x the width of my antena rod !!

All I want to do now is find a way to attach the arms to give me the tacking angle ... the arrow is already fitted ok ...

I needed a new 'Hawk' for my 'V-tronix' aerial, but they told me that they had changed supplier a few years ago, can't recall the details but they either used Hawk originally and someone else now, or vice versa. Give 'em a ring, they seem happy to advise.

I would - but the windy was put in a suitcase and flown 3 hrs to Latvia .. so I have what I have !! and will have to make do !!

What I have to find - is a way to build up the antena diameter to fit the arm boss - but still that it locks in place ..

One idea I had was to fix the arms down on the base loaded part of the antena - leaving the arrow higher up held by the screw blocks. But how to fix to the base ....

Just a few ideas. You might consider a bit of copper piping like 1/4 od. The outside diameter is critical to clamping the pointers onto. The pie can be squashed onto the antenna using large liers or possibly in a vice. Leave the top or ceentre part round for the pointer.
Or you may be able to find a round electrical connector (or file one round) or make similar again using copper pipe and tap a screw into it.
Me I have always had home made wind pointer with no fixed guide pointers and don't need them. I can imagine your dismay however cos commercial pointers are not cheap. good luck olewill
