My Vhf aerial cable chafed through where it had exited the mast so as I had no slack in the cable I decided to see if I could replace the cable as I have access to a plentiful supply of RG58 cable.

When I got the Hawk Wind Direction/VHF aerial down I found end of the cable was crimped into some sort of Copper terminator, Can anyone help me find a source for this please?

Thanks,

Jason.

I'm a bit puzzled as to what you're trying to do. Sounds like you want to replace the entire cable?? I've had 2 VITRONIX 'hawkes'; the first one had the cable permanently attached: the second (supplied as a free replacement) had a connector to the actual antenna.

If the cable is damaged at the foot of the mast, why not just make an in-line join to some new coax (I think off hand, but not certain, that you're correct with RG58)

If you solder the inners - in a straight line- , put some pvc tape around, and stretch the braiding together and solder it (use some soft copper wire over the top if necessay in a spiral) you will have very little degradation ....almost certainly less than if you use an inline or plug/socket connector.

Wrap the whole joint in self-amalgamating tape.

I found what you are looking for (so I think!!!) at an installations workshop for TV antennas, dishes etc.

As a tightarse, I got it for free!

;-)

Good luck.

Sounds like a good idea but..... There was no slack at all. the cable was tight at the top of the mast and at the bottom. the chafing at the bottom was sufficient to allow moisture to go both up and down the cable from the break in the outer shield, so no chance of doing an inline repair/splice. The cable at the top also appeared to be chafed as the cable was sooo tight. So I cut the cable at the top of the mast and took down the Aerial figuring I could replace the cable easily enough plus it would allow me to fit rubber gromits top and bottom easily.

thanks,

J.

Yup, call me stingy too. 99 euros for a new aerial or a couple of quid for a terminator and 10 metres of cable. I'll be stingy every time... hell that would pay for a week on a marina down in West Cork.

Thanks for the offer of the running. Hopefully I'll be able to track the stuff down.
