Fitted hawk yesterday and had to cut coax to get it up the mast. On reassembly I have one small O ring left over. Anyone got some instructions on wherethis goes?

The instructions with the antenna did not say how to replace the brass furrel I fitted one ages ago so went from memory which failed me re the little O ring.

Oh dear, I think you have cut the wrong end off! When I last fitted one, it was the lower (plug) end that was removed, in fact I think the PL259 plug was supplied seperately and fitted later, after the end of the wire had been pulled DOWN through the mast. At the top there is a "bullet" ferule, the locking cap to fit the ferule into the base of the antenna, and a plastic top-hat shaped thing on the cable that is to line the hole in the mast and prevent chafe on the cable. I have no idea how (or if) the ferule can be refitted, as I think it is installed at the factory using some sort of roll-swaging tool.

You are absolutely right Vic. It does look like that in the instructions. I was operating from memory (fitting a Hawk about 1999) and looking at a spare cable which I am holding right now. It is spare because the Vtronix blew off on in 2006 and when replaced, I used the old cable. The bullet on that one is fixed on and seems to have a marked dimple (like what you could do with a centre punch, but much neater than I would do) preventing its removal. It does not screw off.

I am fairly sure it is from a Vtronix antenna although I also have a Glomex one fitted (on the mizzen). From memory, the Glomex cable was permanently attached at the antenna end.

Finally, when the OP fits the aerial, do NOT overtighten the big nut below the bracket. I think that is why mine blew off, as the failure was where the male thread came out of the nut. By coincidence I was looking at the nut yesterday (when I finally threw it out) and the stub at the end of the areial was still threaded into the nut. Unfortunately I was at the mercy of the yard fitter, who took the aerial off when they put the mast up, then refitted the aerial from a cradle on the crane.
