Have you seen this

Yes and I have to say Ofcom were excellent and turned my application round in less than 24 hours. Took more than a week for my VHF to be converted though.

You need to have an MMMSI no already for your DSC VHF.
You then have to get your license varied. OFCOM do this really quickly and send you an electronic variation of the agreement which you print off and keep with your documentation on the boat. Your ATIS no will be your MMSI no prefixed by a '9'. You also have to print a copy of the BASEL Rainwat agreement yourself and keep it on the boat. Ofcom tell you how to do this.

I have a Navman 7200 VHF and the instructions clearly tell you how to enter the ATIS no, and how to enable and disable ATIS (cause you can't use it in the UK or in coastal waters in Europe, only on non UK European waterways)

However, the instrucion book lied and the ATIS update menus were not on my VHF. (I think all UK versions of VHF radios have had this removed) So the set had to go of to the repairers and some time later and minus £25 the set was returned with the ATIS menus working

What if you don't have VHF? I've been cruising the French canals and rivers for 10 years without. A cellphone seems to be fine for contacting the lock-keepers when necessary. Lots of French people seem to be pottering about in dayboats which I'm sure don't have radios either - let alone the kayaks etc.

The requirement has only just started this year. You do not have to have VHF and I guess you are better off using a mobile phone than a non ATIS VHF. I don't really know if this is a problem, I just think its better to have everything in order in case you get stopped.

I've just sent mine (Navman7100) off to Navico (now £39.96) to have the ATIS menu put back where the instruction manual said it should be in the first place.

Ho hum, what's another £40 here or there.

What was it Major Bloodnock said in the Goon Show, "open your wallet and say after me 'help yourself'".
