No don't laugh, I'm being serious. I was filling up a 20 litre jerry can at a filling station this afternoon and one of the little men from inside the shop came totering out asking for my petrol licence. I was a bit speechless to begin with but apparently for anything with a capacity greater than 5 litres you need a licence issued by your local council.

The reason I mention this is that our first boat had one of those big (30 or 40 litres I guess) orange removable fuel tanks which you sit under the seat - so presumably if you try to fill 'em up you'll get your collar felt. Poxy fascist regulations - you'll need a licence to get out of bed next.

The little man was entirely wrong.

Perhaps I'd better explain...

You need a licence to STORE fuel, but not to transport it twixt filling station and boat.
If memory serves you can draw about 80 galls before you run foul of the pet regs.
I was the licence holder for our works petrol storage once upon a time and the licence was from the local fire authority, not the council.

For work purposes the fire authority no longer issue petrol storage licences (for less than 100 and odd litres) and are happy to hand over to the responsibilities and obligations detailed in the DSEAR Regs 2002.

Not had a petrol licence since 2001.

as a retailer of 11 million litres of fuel a year we often get some strange containers used; non so odd as the chap last week who managed to get 47 litres of unleaded in some sort of container which was in a ruck sack he slung over his shoulder as he exited our site on a motor bike...without paying...

sometimes you just have to give it to the runners, if you are prepared to lift 47 litres of fuel and strap it to your back whilst riding a large bike, then I guess you deserve it!

....ooh, and yes you are quiet right, it is all about storage or transporting... 5ltrs official plastic fuel can OK for storage, metal for 10litres OK, 25 litres Jerry Cans OK for transportation..... but for goodness sake DON'T mention filling up your petrol sports boat with 200 litres of fuel on the river Itchen... it will kick off again!

Well at least if doing handstands to empty the backpack into the tanks you can kick off for all you like .

Could be Company policy, I was in the Sainsburys fuel station in Biggleswade a few months ago and they stopped a chap from filling more than one ready can. No real explaination, they just said they were not allowed to let people fill more than one can!
