Have we lost JFM?

JFM is not alone in frequenting this place less often.

There's a number of reasons for this, the main ones I suspect being fatigue / boredom (some of us have been here for over 20 years), and splinter groups being formed on other social media channels (Facebook for Fairline owners) and WhatsApp for groups of people that have become personal friends.

The final nail in the coffin is the new forum software, I prefer it but I know that others don't like it.

Yes, it can be a bit tiring on here!!

Yes, it is a bit 'different' this old codger struggled at first
I was awol for a few months and on my return I thought 'WTF'?
Showed the Kids and all they said was 'get a grip you silly old sod' or words to that effect!

However glad to see that JFM is OK

Now how do I insert one of those imagy emoji laughy things?

I don't like the new forum software either.
But I'm plugging on with it.

I can't put my finger on it - it just doesn't click (sorry for the pun).
I suppose, if I were to comment constructively, I would say that it is more difficult to use.
I'm revamping our marina forum at the moment and the experience with these YBW forums is helping me with my new design for www.scmchat.com .
Or, at least, helping me decide what NOT to incorporate.
RWD is definitely the way to go at the moment.
For those who don't know, RWD is short for Responsive Web Design.
Essentially, it means that the website/forum "adapts itself" to the device that you are using.
So a user reading on a desktop PC will have a different view to a user using mobile phone.
RWD done properly can be very good for both desktop and mobile users but there is something about this forum's new software that doesn't feel right to me on both environments.

But,as I say, I will keep reading/contributing because it is the content of these threads that I'm really interested in.

Mike, what is it that you dislike about this new software?

Funny you should mention it M, because my feeling is precisely the opposite.
Maybe, I'm just becoming an older old fart, so to speak.
But I'm with Scott McNealy of Sun Microsystems fame on this.
He used to urge programmers to not reinvent the wheel every time, his reasoning being that consistency is what the users want, not perfection.
He stretched that to the point of not worrying too much about bugs, because users can cope with them.
As long as they find the same old bug consistently repeated everywhere, it's OK.
It's the new bug out of the blue, appearing with some software supposed to fix the old one, that drive users nuts.

Me, I rarely access the forum with mobile devices (mostly for screen size reasons), but every time I do, I select the "Desktop site" option.
I did that with the old forum engine, and also with the current one. And also with other forums.
Sure, looking at a webpage designed for a PC on a 6" screen ain't exactly exciting: lot of zoom in/out, etc.
But it's a matter of priorities: to me, not having to bother learning a different interface to access a webpage I'm already familiar with in its "standard" format, is much better than any RWD-based optimization.
I.e., consistency, rather than efficiency.
Bu that's me, obviously.

Ok
You have found me out.
It's old git syndrome.
Yes, I can put my finger on it - well part of it.
Font size.
Us oldies eyesight isn't as good as it was.
The bigger the writing, the easier it is.
The fonts, by default should be bigger- IMHO

MapisM - where do you select the desktop version for mobiles? PeteM showed me how to do it on the old forum software but I can't find it on the new software. Ok,I can get my browser to get the desktop version but there used to be a way you could click a link on the old software to do this.

Ok,I can get my browser to get the desktop version
That's what I do! On Chrome for Android, btw.
I never bothered checking is there is an option on this specific forum - or any other, for that matter.
Consistency, yet again...!

I can't answer for Mike but for me its simple. For some reason that I dont understand there is often a slight delay between hitting a key and the character appearing on the screen such that sometimes I'm double typing characters because I think I've missed the key. This isnt all the time but some of the time particularly in the evening when I guess more users are on the forum. Also, I dont know whether there is a connection but my laptop seems to get very hot when I'm on the forum

Is that possibly because of all the Brexshyte posts?

Probably as good an example as any of the sort of irrelevant, childish posts that can plague the boating parts of these fora. The wordplay would probably delight a slightly dim 12 year old. One definite improvement in the new software is the improved ignore function though.

I'd be surprised if the lag that you are experience is affected by the number of users logged in.

What browser are you using Mike?

I would agree that the new forum is very data hungry. It is slow to reacte, slow to load and slow to type. Other forums frequented on the same machines all act normally, so it must be specific to YBW.
