another hole in the hull, which isn't a problem. When I install the fitting I'll ensure there's a lot of Sikoflex around it, but I've clean forgotten what to coat the sides of the hole with initially to ensure no water gets into the wooden core. Can someone please advise please.

Thanks,

Kris

i take it you have balsa core below the waterline? if so it calls for great care.

first point is that you need to prevent the fitting compressing the skins of the sandwich together. you must cut out the core for 5-10mm around the hole and replace it with a material which will both seal the edges of the hole and resist compression. i would suggest epoxy resin mixed with microfibres to a consistency that won't run. that will give the adhesion and strength required.

snowleopard is 'spot' on. I read back through old PBO's recently, since this is on our todo list. while we dont expect the same issue on our boat, the article I found described the same solution to the issue you describe (although I think they descibed it in the context of a foam core?). cant put my hand on it now, but if you want the specifics of the article PM me (I think this will send me an email)

you would think that the manufacturers would have realised that a balsa core below the waterline is not exactly the best design available. Yes I know that it adds lightness, but any small leak, and it doesnt take that long for the balsa core to have a major problem. Closed cell foam is better, but a solid core below the waterline is much better when making a slight error with your tide tables.

I agree but many do have balsa below the WL for reasons of lightness especially performance catamarans where it is justified. If it is done properly at the builders yard (which is seldom is) its justified for performance boats but I would personally always have solid laminate on a cruising boat.
Snowleopard's system will work fine, especially if the fitting is then sealed to the outer skin with a suitable sealant afterwards.
