Have I got the right gearbox?

Last year I had a secondhand Lombardini engine and ZF12 gearbox fitted in my boat; they came already mated up from another boat.
The gearbox from day one was found to be failing, so I have now bought a new ZF12 gearbox to replace it.
The gear selector is on the opposite side of the gearbox to the original.
My engine when viewed from the front turns in a clockwise direction and when viewed from the back it also (according to the propellor shaft connection to the gearbox ie the gearbox output shaft) turns clockwise when viewed from the stern; I thought it would be anticlockwise.
The new gearbox, not yet installed when turned from the front clockwise in forward gear turns anticlockwise when viewed from the stern.
Surely this suggests a Left handed directional gearbox, or I have I gone mad.
I don't want to get the mechanic who has to travel 40 miles out for nothing.

If your propeller is LH then that is correct. Check it against your existing box. More importantly have you got the correct forward gear ratio as it comes with a choice of 2 ratios, 2.1:1 or 2.6:1, both have a reverse of 1.95:1

Thanks Tranona for your thoughts.
The gear ratio is on existing g/box 2.6:1 ; the new one is the lower 2.1:1 as the boat is very slow with the existing gearbox, so that should be an improvement as the engine is more powerful than previously and should go at least as fast ie 6 knts, so I am happy with the new ratio's.
The boat is in the water and the prop. hasn't been changed ; it was RH rotation when viewed from the back of the boat.
Is what you are saying that you think that the existing gearbox ie the old failing one is for a R.H prop or L.H.
As I say the gear selector is on the opposite side to the new one and any pictures I have seen show it oppositely.
I have phoned the supplier and the tech. man says this is a RH rotation gearbox.
The man coming to fit it saw the different locations of the gear selector lever and said 'have you got the right gearbox.

Pleased to say that it would appear that ZF have swapped A & B around since making the last gearbox; pulling the gear selector backwards is now forward .
I will be able to think of something else now.. relief.

Worth checking the size of the propeller as the difference in shaft speed between 2.1:1 and 2.6:1 is significant. Suggest you calculate the correct size for your new boat/engine/box combination.
