Have I damaged my keel

Very new to boating. Very impatient. So apologies in advance for my tale of woe.

I have just had my Verl 27 sailing yacht lifted - to repair damage to the bottom of the keel - and there were some drips coming from the bottom of the keel.

Sourcing the drips, I remembered that I forgot to drain my bilges following the removal of the engine at the end of october - water from said bilges were of an oily affair. That would be three and a half months my bolges have been full.

The drips from the bottom of the keel, in honesty, are minor. small drips for 24 hrs.

My question is, with water within the boat for this length of time, to what extent have I reduced the life of the keel? Is there a risk of osmosis occurring etc?

many thanks in advance for your help.

Possibly you may hav had an oil filled keel, you are probably better of geting an expert into take a look if this is the case because filling an oil filled keel is very difficult. You do not want to re-launch your boat after draingin the oil, because the keel insides will be filled with air now.

If it was thick oil coming out, it was definatey the keel and not the bilge water!

Wouldn\'t worry about it...

The Verl 27 has an encapsulated keel, and if these are damaged (often through grounding) they can get water inside them and so will sometimes "weep" a bit when the boat's lifted. Let it drip for a while - maybe even drilling holes in the area of damage to encourage water to leak out - then get the damage repaired. It's unlikely to result in serious damage or longer-term reliability issues.

Cheers for that. sorry for the confusion but the bilge was still full with the oily water.....as opposed to oily water coming out of the keel.

the kingfisher 30 has oil filled keels (gas oil/diesel fuel tanks)

[/ QUOTE ] To have fuel tanks in the keel is a different thing to an oil filled keel.
