We are looking to store our boat ashore for 8 months and had looked at El Kantoui in Tunisia. Has any forumite been there and could advise on security? We have to leave our boat in a non eu country (we are Ozzies) and we are not going to make it to Turkey by the end of the summer.

We had thought of Croatia but cant get any email responses from anyone there. El Kantoui have been very prompt with emails and quotes but we dont know how secure or safe it is.

Any advise please from those in the know??

regards

The marina/port is part of an apartment/tourism complex. The yard is on the Nth point of the entry to the port. There is not much storage area and it is exposed to the sea on the East side. Security is generally very good as the whole port is part of a "Zone Touristique" which is well looked after and there is limited access to the everyday citizen. On top of that there is usually a strong winter liveaboard group there.

We spent 4 weeks in Tunisia in 2005 and found it very interesting. Not so much as a cruising ground but for the history and culture. Tunisia marinas/ports seem better placed for liveaboard than leaving boats on the hard but others may have a different experience.

I am surprised you haven't had response from Croation yards as there have been quite a few mentioned over time on here. One at Murter, the Nth end of the island a bit south of Zadar comes to mind. Perhaps others can tell you more about it or other options.

From my '777 Hoarbours & Anchorages in Croatia' I can give you this contact info for Murter:
Marina Hramina info@marina-hramina.hr www.marina-hramina.hr (250 dry berths)
Betina Marina Tel: 022 434497 (60 dry berths)
No connection to either. Good luck.

We are afloat in Yasmine Hammamet and visited El Kantoui last summer for a few days (about 30 miles south). Very touristy in the season. If you are afloat in the marina you will become one of the 'exhibits' to be oggled and photographed. Not sure about the laying up facilities but may be limited. Check out Monastir further down the coast. We will be hauling out there next winter for a few weeks. Big boat yard and wide range of services. Always check if the yard allows owners to work on their boats, some don't.
Cheers
Colin

We have left our boat afloat there for two winters with no harm or things going missing, apart from a power adaptor when they rewired the pontoons.
There is a night watchman who stays in the yard on the hard, there is Bob, or Captain Bob to the locals who lives aboard on the hard, fitting out his boat, who should be able to assist with sourcing any bits you may need.
Easy bus ride into Sousse for the market or trains, and a mini supermarket on the complex that does not inflate its prices.
Space is limited as at Monastir, and it is worth booking if you want to proceed, a fair number of Winter liveaboards in the marina.
