Hmmmm I am having difficulty sourcing a new hatch to replace an old Canpa hatch in my saloon. The Canpa hatches seem to have a size all of their own so I was hoping to avoid any remedial work to get a new one to fit. The internal measurements are 300mm x 420mm and I can't seem to find one remotely close. Anyone had any luck replacing their old fiberglass Canpa monstrosity?

Can't help I'm afraid. I also have a Canpa hatch and many owners of similar boats have had to cut to a new size to replace them. It might help if anyone has the sizes Canpa manufactured and could post details, please.

Rob.

Hatch replacement

I had same problem. I think...

The original hatch on my Ohlson 38 was solid fibreglass and held down by threaded swing bolts. I am sure impossible to open in a hurry and gloomy below. You can just see the old hatch in the first pix.

So I had fitted an Ocean 60 Lewmar which had correct dimensions for fore and aft but the thwart-ships dimensions were far too wide for the Lewmar hatch.

We had to create a new base insert using the original hatch top as the new template base, and below, bring the port and starboard sides closer in to form a new aperture. Then make a teak crown to match the template radius. Then install the Lewmar hatch on the crown.

I was 500 miles from the boat and had professional installation which was excellent and such a big improvement to safety and comfort. Just don't ask me what it cost...

Seateach at Emsworth have quite a variety of hatches inc Lewmar, I don't think Canpa but worth a try. 01243 375774.

Be very careful, insistent and clear about dimensions; a chum bought a 'direct houdini replacement' from them and apart from the bolt spacing and every dimension being different it was spiffing !

I have had 2 Lewmar hatches of the same size from them, and the bolt spacing was completely different on the second one...
