I am in a position to be able to get a permanent mooring in either Haslar Marina in Portsmouth Harbour, or Ocean Village in Southampton. Anyone have any opinions as I am having difficulty deciding?

I've always liked Haslar, but others have noted there is nothing at all to do in West side of Porstmoutn, nothing for kids etc. Great access to Solent of course, straight out to open water for x-channel stuff etc., no long slog down Southampton Water

Ocean vill has more to do, shops, cinema, etc. But be careful of the berths along the lager-can throw zone, by harry ramsdens. Also, the berths on the W side are quite a long walk away from the action. "A" pontoon seems best.

How do the costs compare and how far away is each from home? Those would be deciding factors for me. All things being equal, I would go for Ocean Village because there's more to do and you've got the many and varied cultural delights of Southampton on your doorstep, ha, ha. Haslar is in a bit of a wasteland and Portsmouth's even more of a dump than Southampton. All IMHO, of course

I have been at both, but the Ocean Village period was a long time ago. Access to restaurants etc. is better at Ocean Village but I'm sure it's more expensive than Haslar and that hike down Southampton Water before you can start going anywhere is a lot faster by car!

Hasler has very friendly and helpful staff, and although I cannot speak for the current people at Ocean Village, the general atmosphere at MDL run places is not so boaty.

The outer berths at Haslar suffer a good deal of working with the ferries coming in and out, but on the other hand it's a working harbour, more to see and more going on, Ocean Village is sterile by comparison.

I think on balance that I'd prefer Haslar, but if my wife was nautical enough to ever visit the boat she'd probably find the diversions round OV more to her liking.

I am no longer a marina person I'm pleased to say.
