Has the Thames frozen yet?

The closest i've ever seen it come to freezing over was 30years ago, on the Wallingford stretch it started to freeze on all the still bits at the edges, but all these bits broke off and drifted downstream. The weir at Cleeve stopped it all and it backed up nearly as far Byrons at Moulsford, so in effect the river was covered with ice for at least a mile, it certainly feels cold enough to do that again but I think unlikely to freeze over the main channel properly.

Sitting here looking at the Thames at Hampton and no sign of any ice.

I do remember it freezing in the 90’s at Kingston. There is a picture on the wall in the committee room at Minima YC (125 years old this year) showing the main channel frozen. I remember it being taken in the 90’s but can’t recall the exact year or date.

My earliest memory is walking around our boat, Straight Across, frozen in the river at Nicholls, the yard upstream of Bell Weir, in the 63' freeze up.

1964? My neighbour has a photo of him driving a mini on river just downstream of me. I can remember a few years back when I couldn't move my Dory to go to the aid of a Swan frozen in at the Beetle & edge.

I remember walking out on the ice at PHM when i was a kid , about 20 years ago .... walked all the way to the gravel pile in the centre ...

Looking back it was a pretty dumb thing to do ....

Marble hill park used to freeze over most years when i was a kid . It was great as the water was only a few inches deep so it was safe to play on all day . People used to ice skate on it . It must still do it .

The park at Richmond lock (old deer?) froze years ago and I went ice skating on it admittedly in ladies boots...

Just seen the lock cut (Tedd) could not break the ice no matter how hard we tried with larger and larger stones...(sorry Howard if you are working that was us)

No , not on till tonight ....

All the oiks have been out chucking rocks , branches , logs etc etc at the ice for the last few days.

Forecast is for minus 10 tonight , doubt it will make it , but it will thicken the ice a lot ....

A mate went skiffing on Sunday morning. He approached Old Windsor lock and, for a laugh, kept going through the ice. Then got stuck.... and couldn't get any grip from his blades /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
