Was buzzed by Raider (I assume) on the way back to the Orwell on Sunday - Jack and the lads were so preoccupied with zooming around at high speed that they totally ignored our dipped ensign salute.

What's the world coming to?

This really used to pee me off when I went to sea with the grey funnel line...

Like you said - they were obviously preoccupied. What did you expect them to do? Drop everything? Or have someone on permanent standby to lower and raise a bit of cloth? The 'we pay your salary' crowd is going to love that.

There's a time and place for everything - this obviously wasn't it.

[/rant] Sorry

Simon

I am sure Raider would not 'buzz' a yacht - if she was at speed then she would maintain a course to avoid hampering others with her wash and was probably too far away to see a yacht sized ensign being dipped. Or was it the Coastguard Cutter? What time, where (roughly) and how close were you and I can try and find out? If just outside the lock into Ipswich or whilst berthing etc I would not expect them to respond. I have been surprised when I have been onboard by how few boats do dip to RN.

I assume that was a joke:confused:I can think of no reason why I might or should do that. No offence to anyone who might unnecessarily take offence. Please feel free to line the decks and salute a loyal taxpayer:D

No, not a joke, if I see a warship of any nationality and am close enough I dip my ensign. Just a tradition I picked up sailing as a youngster.

The tradition was a sign of not threatening their authority in the same way that firing gun salutes is to show the guns are empty. Just a custom of the sea and a mark of respect.

Sir,

RAIDER was indeed at sea on Sunday, although we take great care to avoid 'buzzing' anyone; I am very conscious of the wake we kick out at high speed. We do not intentionally ignore dipping ensigns - as Karouise points out we see it less and less often these days and are happy to oblige - but if we see you again you may rest assured we will return your courtesy salute.

Best regards, and safe sailing.

Nothings changed ..... Back in the dark ages as a a lowly stern lookout on HMS Troubridge (Thats Troubridge NOT Troutbridge) we used to hide rather than having to dip the Ensign to Yots. (Not that we saw too many in those days !

P275 - thanks for the reponse

I was speaking slightly tongue in cheek although - like Karouise, I was always taught to dip the ensign to a warship of any nationality and my kids get a kick out of a returned salute. There's nothing wrong in my slightly antiquated book with observing such traditions. I was fully aware that your attention was elsewhere and I was only having a pop on this forum in case Peter had been on the flybridge!

Keep up the good work

Raider is a HMCE Ship not Grey Funnel Line

Sorry to correct you, but I'm afraid she is.

The 5 cutters belonging to HMCE/UKBA/whatever-they're-called-this-week are: Valiant, Vigilant, Searcher, Seeker and Sentinel. They are about twice the length of the RN Archer class.
