My Volvo 151s have now well passed their sell buy date (18 years old) just blown a head gasket on one and am now told by local marine engineere its probably better to replace the engine rather than repair
So do I buy a couple of used 151s or bite the bullet and replace both units with new units with 2 year guarantees ??
The former is cheapest option but will it be say over 5 years
If anyone has been through this or has experience of this situation luv to hear from you
Cheers
Yall

There was an artical in MBM a few years back about someone who put twin 105bhp diesels in a Carrera, was quite successful I think. Do a search on their copyshop service.

I cant think of one good reason for replacing the engines. Less course you just fancy something different, or theres some more funimental problems. Repair or rebuild the engines you've got. 18 years old is not much for a boat engine, mine are 19 years old and still run perfectly. Umm well they did!! But thats another story. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I re-engined my Carrera a couple of years back however it was a single engined version. I did lots of deliberating about diesel vs petrol and opted to put in a brand new Volvo Penta 4.3 V6 petrol, it totally transformed the boat. As it had a BMW in originally the transom had to be rebuilt which added to complexity but it was well worth doing!

I´ve re-engined my Sprint, updated the original carb 4.3 with a fuel injected 4.3 and new DP leg. As the cutout for the transom shield was different the transom had to be rebuilt and a new cutout cut in the blank transom (approx 500 for the transom work).

I´d suggest that a cheaper option would be to replace the twins with a bigger single, will33 has obviously put the same GXi4.3 in as I have done but the bigger injected V8 Volvos would also work well and would be a perfectly usable single engined boat with more space in the engine room. PM me for more info and costs if you are interested....

To Be honest,

I have looked at buying older boats and re-engining them. The majority of advice was to go with a large single diesel rather than 2 new Petrols. You do need to do some work to the transom but the weight to power ratio will not be affected and you will have lower running costs. If you keep her about 3/4 years you should break even as you will get a slightly higher resale. A decent D3-190hp with Duo will set you back £11,000 plus wiring and fitting. All in for under £15k. That is the way I would go and if you speak to Coastal Rides they will advise on it.

If you take the savings in Fuel and servicing say £300 a month that will pay for a 5 year loan!

Cheers

Thanks Joe am already been speaking with Paul at Coastalrides..he has 4 recon 151s tempting to go with 2 of them and take the risk although the KAD 32 route looks very tempting
thanks

You need to be careful with the sums though, a single petrol replacement will still achieve the service savings vs the previous twin and probably be just as reliable as a new diesel (esp given all engines reliance on electronics these days). The fuel savings element won't be the same in the calculation (although my like for like improved by 15% compared to the old carb engine!), but then the all in fitted cost of a new petrol and leg will probably be less than half that of the new single diesel and leg.

Re-engined a Fairline Sunfury with twin diesels..... Transformed it into a superb boat...BUT

It only works if you can do most of the work yourself otherwise the costs just dont stack up.

In your case , I would suggest that the way to go is to remove the existing engines and either to re-con them or fit the recon 151s from Coastal rides.

Avoid engine management electronics unless you plan to do minimal DIY and/or belong to SeaStart. They seem immune to fixing out in the 'oggin.

Is there a new engine (petrol or diesel) out there that doesn't rely on electronic engine management???? Thought they all had to to achieve modern emissions and fuel economy (cough!) standards....

I re engined my Carrera with twin volvo 105 diesels. The exercise was featured in MBM. Very expensive, but a massive improvement to the boat. A cheaper option would be a single second hand KAD32.
