Has anyone ever imported an outboard or anything similarly substantial from the US to the UK.

Outboards are more plentiful in the US meaning that larger hp engines are substantially cheaper and widely more available for example 2008 Yamaha 250hp four stroke $3900 and others similarly priced

So what would be the import duties etc on that kind of thing ?

You would have to be extremely optimistic to buy a second hand outboard motor unseen - at least if you bought one from a professional seller in the UK you would have the chance to return it if it didn't work, but all the way from the US?

Once you have paid the shipping, import duty and VAT on the engine I doubt if it will still be a bargain, even if it does work as advertised.

It's the availability of options which is attractive as well as the price. A quick search on eBay reveals very little in the UK but in the USA there are a number of different options.

I'm not sure there are many 250hp four strokes available under £10,000 over here.

There are plenty of ways nowadays to check the legitimacy of engines it's not all carrier pigeons anymore. ?

Good question. Duty rates on outboard engines range from 4.2% to 6.2% depending on power output, but there is currently a cross Atlantic dispute between USA and EU regarding leisure boats and may go as high as 25%

Thanks BruceK. if I were looking for a sub 150hp unit it would be silly to consider this option but, the availability and prices of used Four Stroke 200-300hp engines, even at 25% its still very viable to get what I want.
