I did my DS Theory studies first using RYA and other useful books, then, when I thought I was completely ready I did my DS Practical and at the same time sat the DS theory which I passed, I then went on to do YM/Coastal Theory.
I would certainly recommend as others have said, DS Theory first in whichever way it suits YOU (personal study, distance learning, study group with others, training school probably the best and most popular and you will learn a lot more from tutors/others) then go onto to your DS Practical. If you get stuck, we have some excellent experts on here!
The above will give you a good grounding. It's great to see you're taking this seriously, you will be amazed how many do not bother....!
