Re: Has anyone had, or heard of, gearbox problems in association with the Perkins Perama M30 engine? NM
Yes, I had problems after only 200 to 300hrs running. I completely stripped and rebuilt the gearbox renewing some clutch plates and pressure springs. After discussions with various service agents I discovered that these boxes are prone to the effects torsional vibrations which results in wear of the clutch plate teeth and the mating surfaces on the cogs themselves. Also the shimming of the shafts seemed incorrect. I have been advised that torsional wear can be reduced by keeping the idle speed of the engine high (1000rpm plus). I also ghanges to a 2 stage damper plate made by R & D marine which is designed to overcome such problems. Also, it is worth checking that the oil level (use only ATF) is correct. It should be measured with the dip stick is resting in its hole but NOT screwed fully home. Please contact me if I can be of any further help.
