I wonder if anyone has used the Rhine conal to get to or leave the Baltic? Last year someone had a log but as i was leaving i lost the link.

I wonder if its fast flowing anything like the Rhone?

Being Gemany there are bound to be lots of regulations. I read some where ages ago your not allowed to stop??

Any info suggestions are welcome,

It may take me a while to check this post as im away from any internet conections or GPRS untill wenesday or thursday, I will be back to read the posts and im sure have further questions!!

Thanks

I work in Cologne and watch the River Rhine frequently. It flows very fast, at least 4 knots and the barges going downstream are going at a very fasst pace just to give steerage. Scary.

I intend to use this route when we set off for the Blasck Sea through the inland route.

I am told that there are places where you can get decent food along the way too.

Thanks for the fast post,my batteries are almost gone im sitting in a cafe with a connection!

That sounds awful! Unles of coures i fit a 200HP outboard??

I dont know how the hull speed relates to rivers? At sea i can go far faster at times than my hull speed. (the GPS says so!!)

On a river what would my maximum hull speed be? 4 Knots is almost as bad as the Rhone!! If i put a 9.9HP outboard on i wonder if i could get up? Same going down, how would i stop when being carried by such a current!

I had hoped it was a lazy meandering river! Should of known the Germans would have a fast efficent river!

Wonder if there are any barges that offer transport??

It would be a wonderful trip to be able to see so much contry side! And stop for lunch at a cafe!!!

At risk of stating the obvious, if your cruising speed is 5kts, against a 4kt current your ground speed will be 1kt. Under a bridge where the flow speeds up, you might not be going anywhere! At 6kts, you'll be doing 2kts upstream.

Sounds a bit like hard work to me!

As the Rhine is quite fast, quite a lot of people choose the Maas and then some channels (Mittellandkanal etc. )to get to the Baltic. I live at the Mosel (which is slow with locks), but quite a lot of yachts pass each year coming from/going to the Rhine. They say the Rhine is a lot slower if one keeps out of the middle of the channel - but so do the barges!

Went down the Rhine a couple of years ago, turned on at the Mosel (deutche Eck)and shot down at 10 knts at half engine revs ,fairly hectic as you have to keep an eye open for barges with blue boards up (about 50%) as i remember .but very quick down past Duisburg to Wesel-Datteln canal, this is about 100 miles but easy in one day if you start early.I wouldn't fancy going against the current unless i had a powerful motor.
From there it took eight days to Lubeck

Chris! It was your log i was looking for!Last year i was i such a rush getting everything ready i dident have time to read more than the parts in the med!

I hope this year it rains less and is a bit walmer! I tried to get to Finland but just after mid summer (a week later) i met large boats 14m that gave up trying to get to marriham! I spent several freezing wet days in Waxholm!

As my boat still leaks when it rains for a few hours i hope for dry weather!Last year those that went to Finland had sun the rest of the Summer! But as i had never been to the Baltic everything was new so i explored Sweden!

Ive been practicing my "baltic mooring" with the stern anchor as i was amazed to see where the Swedish moored! In one case a large police boat spent half an hour deciding weather a large sail boat anchored in the middle of a chanel entrance was allowed or not, seems he was!

I had hoped the Rhine was a large slow river! Now ill look at the Maas, but i think that moves as well??
