Hello

We are planning a surprise trip to Ibiza to visit family members who are having a holiday there at the beginning of May. They are staying in Santa Eulalia so we were keen to book a few nights at the marina there so we had a convenient base. We've tried to phone the marina to book but were told they were undergoing construction so couldn't take bookings until the end of May.

Has anyone been there recently or is there at the moment and can tell us what is going on? We are unsure whether or not to just turn up and hope they would let us in. Especially as we only want to be there for three nights.

Although we love anchoring we were keen to be in a marina as one of our family members would not visit the boat at anchor.

Any help or information available would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Darren & Vicki

I called there in 2007..... They condescended to let us stay on the fuel berth overnight, at full rates. Had to leave first thing in the morning. Truly obnoxious.

Called in again on the way back in 2009, wouldn't even let us go alongside.

I only wanted 1 night each time.

If I never see Sta. Eulalia Marina again, it will be too soon!

Had a similar experience there in 2002 - never been back.

We stayed for a couple of nights in around 2005. Jill reminds me that we needed to book a place a couple of days ahead, nothing available when we first called. It was packed to the gills and we were fortunate to get a berth, mainly for doing laundry. About ten boats anchored outside, unable to get in. I remember that when we left we were due out at 1200. At 1000 a person to whom the berth had been rented following us was banging on the hull wanting to know when we were leaving. They were very obnoxious but as I remember the marina staff were OK. I doubt if you have much chance of a berth if turning up unbooked.

Yep stayed in the marina for 3 days back in 2006 for engine repairs. this was in May, if you go June, July or aug they will be full. You can anchor right outside for free and row ashore

Thanks for the honest replies.

Doesn't sound too promising.

I'm not sure what we'll end up doing but maybe we'll anchor close by and then look at our options from there.
Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be any reasonably priced marinas close by either. If that were the case we could just get public transport to Santa Eulalia.

Back to the drawing board...

We stayed 2 nights in May in 2011 in Ibiza Magna, lovely situation bang in the centre of Ibiza. No facilities (loos or showers), cost 55 euros a night for our 9.2 x 6 cat, water 17 min extra. There are surely good buses from Ibiza city to Santa Eulalia. This might be your best bet.

The price is a bit negotiable, as it depends on how they apply taxes.

Try PMing David of Mersea of this forum. He can tell you exactly what is going on at the marina, but I would guess it will be busy in May.

I PM'd DoM las night and asked him to PM the OP. He PM'd me back with the answer, thinking I was the OP. I PM'd him back advising that I was not the OP but I had PM'd DoM as I thought it a little cheeky asking the OP to PM DoM directly. I then asked him to PM the OP. He PM'd me back today to say that he had PM'd the OP.

Anyway, it is full.

Thanks again for all your help guys......

Will try the ignorance thing and turn up anyway, nothing ventured nothing gained!!!!!
If not and the weather is ok then we will anchor outside or head for the marina Magna as recommended by Tony MS.
Thanks again all, very much appreciate the heads up

We spent 2 nights in Santa Eulalia last August, about £100 a night, very cheep compared to Ibiza Town which was £350 a night.

Its 1/2 that price out with July and August.

Great wee town, and the facilities were fine, we will be back this year.

okyar.. perhaps he could get his people to fax their people and suggest they do lunch :)

I wouldnt book in Ibiza marinas, there is normally no room in the summer, prices are a total rip off, anchoring in little sea inlets (calas) is full of problems (overcrowded) Place is nice though.

I did read in spanish boating forum www.latabernadelpuerto.com , some Ibiza marinas charge over 100€ a night, and they charge you even to load water...so different to here.

Happy sailing.

Thanks again for your replies

We wouldn't normally entertain going in marinas in places like Ibiza, as we can't afford or would not encourage the prices these marinas charge which in our opinion are obscene. We did need to find some where safe to park our home while we spent some quality time with my brother and sister in law as they are having a thought time at the moment.
But it looks like their 2 year old has got pneumonia and think they will be cancelling anyway so we will probably go to Formentera for a couple of day of anchoring and head back to Gibraltar.
If you’re in the area look out for us, were the small blue boat anchored outside Cartagena, enjoying a beautiful quite anchorage!

We've moored in St Eulalia several times during our 5yrs in the Balearics and we found the area quite attractive. We always tried to book and they never agreed to take a booking; all they would say is ring back at 5pm and when we did, if they bothered to answer, they would always say they were full. Like any W Med marina, you will have just as much success rocking up around 2-3pm, mooring on the fuel berth or transit berth, finding the chief marinero or whoever seems to be in charge and slipping him a €20 note (more in July/Aug). May is still low season so you should find a few berths available. Yes you can anchor outside the marina entrance but IMHO its a bit exposed and subject to trip boat wakes. There are 3 marinas in Ibiza Town harbour itself which also may have berths available but they will probably be more expensive than St Eulalia. Don't anchor inside the breakwater at Ibiza Town though; it was made illegal during our time in the Balearics and rumour has it that a few yotties were heavily fined for doing it

The bribe is pretty much my usual mooring fee as a visitor to a British marina. :(

Thanks Deleted User

Very interesting information, as my Brother and sister in law can't make it now I would not go in this marina out of principle, due to the way they treat their cruising customers. But interesting to here that if you’re desperate then a cheeky note can persuade a marinaro! I would have been concerned of offending people by offering baksheesh but you have confirmed that this is possibly the way!!!!. Thanks again guys, have sailed to the westerly anchorage on Formenteria for a few days RnR before we head back to Gib.
P.S. If you like us needed to be in this marina, we asked a good mate in Gib to call for us who is a Gibraltarian and speeks fluent Spanish and they still refused a berth, so it isn't just and English thing. Probably just like big boats and bribes....
