Harwich > Deben

The sixth anchroage down here
http://www.woodbridgecruisingclub.co.uk/anchorages.php
is the rocks. There is a bit of a hole near the upsteam end and I think some of the breaking loose that occurs is when folks anchor near the hole, drag a few yards and the anchor drops into the hole!

We are going out over the bar for first time this year next thurday or friday and will get the last minute skinny from John White HM at Felixstowe Ferry before we go - will report back.

As if you need to ask.
You have only been doing it for 30 years I believe.

Pilotage out of the front entrance. turn Left then 1st left.
Mind the shallow bits.
Head up river until you find a motley collection of craft.

Chuck something heavy over the side with some chain on it.
If you don't stop you have not got the correct heavy bit.
Anchor light and BALL advised .

Bring your own BBQ and food.

Morning paper available about 5 miles up river.
Get your rowing practice here.

Went out over the Bar last w/e & reckon its about 0.2m at LWS based on the depths found then, admittedly after strong NE winds, so may be less. Probably around the same as late last season, least depth being a couple of boat lengths inshore of the W Knolls. Shingle bank E of the Mid Knolls has built considerably over the winter but nothing challenging navigating in/out if you stick near the buoys.

bought my first mooring chain from Frank in 1973 /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: Harwich > Deben

Some of the ground in the Deben is quite hard so an anchor that bites well is a good option, something like a Bruce. I have failed to grip with a 45lb CQR on occasion.

You'll look a right wally with a cone but a light is a good idea if only to scare away helicopters on training-runs.
