Hi Folks, I've just purchased a beautiful little old wooden Hartley TS16. I have one small problem - the boat i have purchased does not have a retractable (pop-top / sliding) cabin roof section. I'm well over 6ft tall and I believe it would be much easier to enter the cabin with the retractable roof. Does anybody know how I would go about replacing this section of the cabin roof? Also, does anybody know much about the boom tents / awnings for these boats? Do i just make my own? What material / design should i use. Thanks /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

hi Underwater.Welcome to the forum. I built a TS 16when about 17 years old.Like yours mine had a pair of sliding wasboards but no sliding or raising hatch.OKfor a youngster but It would do my back in now.Other than that she was a great little boat and surprisingly fast.

you may be able to get specific information here http://www.trailer-sailer.com/

Brilliant little boat, I had one for four years from when I was 16yo. Rebuilt all the rotten bits, entire rebuild almost. Good project.

I would imagine you could just cut the hole required back to the nearest frame. As long as the cabin top is thicker than 18mm ply there should be no problem. Look at other sliding hatches on other boats for finishing and design.

Possibly strenthen the longitudinal edges if it looks a little flimsy.

Post sime pics of the area you are looking to cut and it would be better to give you some advice.

I had so much fun on mine, looking at one of the other links the boat is unsinkable. This I can confirm. I never sank it but had it neutraly bouyant under the surface of the water on 3 occasions. Never actually sank it. But it did take a severe thrashing in heavy seas and strong winds regularly, although I would not recomend this.

I had a few TS16s but now have a Hartley30, extended to 36ft. The ply construction is very simliar as is the hull design.
