I have been puzzling over an ingress of water into my boat around the area of a Harken power winch.

Its suddenly dawned on me that the winch has a loose vertical pin that the winch handle presses to disengage the motor, I am wondering if thats where the waters got in.

I notice now I have the spray hood up this leak seems to have stopped. Must have been vertical rain to get down the socket though :-)

Any one experienced similar?

I will get out and buy a winch cover this afternoon as a precaution.

I dont know much about electric winches but would assume from what you say that there must be come kind of seal, probably an 'O' seal, to prevent the ingress of water.
Might just need replacing.

Good call just looked at the installation manual and there is indeed a rubber O ring and a seal below decks. Will service the winch next weekend an pay particular attention to these.

Just went down to boat the big but with slotted head that holds the winch tother and the pin slides through was loose, tighten it up and the seal the pin runs through is now gripping the pin .

Ran a load of water into it and it drained out the side fine so hopefully thats all sorted
