I have a question Re. The harken 44 (1994 model) electric winch on a Dehler 35 cws. I was able to take off the central screw in ‘pin’ / rod by pulling up on the white push down top with a pair of pliers. This allowed enough grab to loosen the thread. I am now unsure how to screw the central pin back in as the white top is free swivelling and there is nothing to suggest grab for the central pin to screw back in. I managed to screw it in partly by using the whinch handle to push down the white swivel top to disengage the motor and then turn the winch by hand. There is some 3/4mm lift / upward play still however and I am not convinced I have done it correctly. If you havent used this 1994 electric winch before a lot of what I have written won’t make sense - if you have then any advice would be appreciated as to how to tighten it fully.

Not sure I understand. Have you got the parts diagram? If not, attached here. Does that help?

I seem to remember that the central pin just drops into place. It pushes down and disconnects the motor when a winch handle is used.

Thanks for the diagram and reply. The manual shows the part 738189, which is the part I dont quite understand. The part has a white and black cylinder top that is connected to the main rod. On the same rod, under the top white/ bkack cylinder is the free swivelling threaded bit - and I dont understand how I can check that it has fully tightened. Is does seem to do up when it put the handle in, but it cannot be tightened from the top with a screwdriver as the top bit isnt connected to the the threaded bit. I have contacted Harken and sent then a couple of videos of the part in question and they said they would get back to me. In the meantime, the winch is secure against the base - but it lifts a couple of millimetres more than I would have expected. I will post any info I get from Harken when I get it. Thanks

I really can't remember. I had the winch apart in order to do work to the gearbox (new bearings and seals) and I took a load of pics but none of that section of the winch. I just seem to think that the central rod piece pushes down and isn't held in by anything because it goes in after the winch is assembled (I think). My boat is in Greece so I can't look at the winch for you.

One thing I don't understand in your description is the coloured items. The only thing I can remember coloured was the white plastic seal.

You, of course, will only have a real problem if you go upside down (the clutch rod will fall out). If you stay upright you should be ok until you get further advice.

Edit: I have just looked at the pictures again. I think that small cylinder being held in Pic 2 is the item which is screwed down. It has a slot for a screwdriver. It screws down into the larger cylinder which he is also holding in that picture. Sorry, but this was about 3 years ago I think I did all this work.

As you say I don’t plan to go upside down any time soon lol and it has coped well in the few passages in choppy seas made since - it has screwed itself in somehow but I would like to know how considering that screw slot isn’t visible / there on the cap on the cylinder on mine - and it seems to rotate the main rod but not the swivelling thread stainless second cylinder under it. I hope Harken will illuminate but in the meantime I will be using it as normal.
