Just looking at a local boat for sale badged as a Hardy 16 - but I can't find anything online about this boat - is there such a boat as a Hardy 16 and can anyone tell me anything about them?

Thanks

Not aware of a Hardy 16 but they used to make a Hardy 17. I owned one for a few years and traveled/trailed all over the south coast with it. What engine does the one your looking at have? most came with 25hp but this is not large enough. The maximum rated engine for these was I believe 40hp, that's what I would be looking for. Mine ended up with a 50hp but that was after a call to both Hardy and my insurer

I'd say not a Hardy. Never seen one like that, almost all the early small ones had rope gendering. You could contact Hardy to ask them.

Humm, yep I saw that boat last year on the Dart being advertised, seemed to me to be quite unusual for a Hardy as the usual 17 is a fishing boat with o/ power and this is slightly shorter but appears to be on outboard boat. Looking at the Hardy Owners internet site above (5) it appears to actually feature that boat stating that its a sailing boat but neither the featured boat or the Brokers site mention or show any rigging for it; suggest that its probably a sailing /o/board design without the sailing rig. Might be worth looking to see if it has a raising center board?

For completeness of the original question, the boat in question is a "Genuine" Hardy, she's a Hardy 16 Trailer Sailer, only a couple built I think - one complete with rig, one unfinished (this one). She was offered to me years ago by John Hardy, but she wasn't for me!

Hardy built a few boats back in the day that are rare and often not recognised as a Hardy, these include the Hardy 335S / 337S, Hardy Fishing 33, Hardy Fishing 22, Hardy 16 Trailer Sailer.
