The replanking phase of NYACHILWA's restoration is approaching. The hull was originally planked in 1'' Honduras/Brazilian mahogany - full (33 feet) lengths.
There have been some repairs since then, which now need re-repairing. I think we can get African mahoganies in long enough lengths, but it would be nice to do the right thing.....Does anyone know of a UK source of the timber formally known as Swietenia macrophylla?

Hi there,

It is still called swietenia macrophylla usually obtained as Brazilian Mahogany.
If you can get it it is eye-warteringly expensive due to restricted imports. I have been offered FSC mahogany in the past year so check the companies below.
Try either Timbmet near Oxford tel 01865 862223 or W.L. Wests in Sussex 01798 861611.
Timbmet show mahogany on their stock list but you will have to phone to check. Also you have to have an account to buy from them.

I think Wests have some Brazilian mahogany possibly FSC but I don't see any on their stock list.
Another merchant worth checking is Whitmore's Timber in Leicestershire. I don't have their number but they have a web site if you search for Whitmores timber on Google you will get their number. Ask for Geof Negus.

If you dont get any joy there try calling around joinery shops . one of those may have some they can mill up for you , but to be honest the stuff is like rocking horse s**t
