I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas of hardwood suppliers to the public along the M3. (Live in Camberley, work in Winchester, boat in Gosport).

I need some teak for the companionway but also some other woods for interior areas.. I have used Solent Marine chandlery in Gosport for small bits of teak but it seems quite randomly priced and a bit limited in sizes.

I picked up the K.J.Howells brochure at SIBS.. anyone have any experience of using them? and how do prices square up against non marine suppliers?

Are there any non marine suppliers that are cheaper in this area where you can browse and buy?? Mainstream DIY shops dont seem to have hardwood.

Many thanks

Richard

lookup timbmet on a search engine to find nearest depot they are one of the biggest timber suppliers to the trade - they should sell you any quantity

I quite like Goodwillies www.ttf.co.uk/buying/directory/members.asp?member_ref=000150 at Waterlooville, its a 10 min detour just off the A3 and ypu can pick out quite a good choice of many boaty hardwoods,or they will machine up stuff too.I believe they are importers too and will also deliver but you might prefer to go and pick out stuff in their shed.Note Saturdays they close at noon and stock levels can vary a bit..

Covers (Timber merchants in South Hants) have a specialist section at their Chichester branch, and which allows you to go and pick out what you want. If you go to Solent Marine, and go upstairs you will find a separate company who do yottie work in hardwood and they may be able to help

At least Arnold Laver do iroko, because I bought a load from them last year to make a garden bench, which I recently completed.

Not sure that you will get real teak (as opposed to Iroko) anywhere these days, but as far as I know there is not much difference between them anyway (both are a real pain to work with as far as I know ;-) )

I've never fully understood the difference between teak and iroko, whether they are really different species to each other or not.

I've also ordered from SL Hardwoods, who also have a delivery service and would deliver to Camberley. You can order online - www.slhardwoods.co.uk. Delivery usually about £15 or so but obviously depends on quantity.

Can't tell you how they compare on price but I have found K.J.Howells very helpful. They were happy to provide teak to my specifications, and are honest if timber in stock is not up to the job.

Thoroughly recommend them.
