Hi forumites, I wish to make a new mast (if this is the correct term) for my boat. When we purchased the boat this was not fitted although the mounting bracket is there. The mast i mean is normally i think a cross shape, what is the correct name for this mast / pole where i can fit the navigation lights etc and would this normally be made from hardwood. Does anyone know where i can view examples of these so that i know what to make, ours needs to be approximately 1.3 metres high. When doing internet searches i am only finding sailing boat masts so maybe there is a special name for this on a cabin cruiser type boat ?

Can't answer the Mobo part of the question but wooden masts are usually made of softwood not hardwood. Mind you it is a a good quality softwood such as sitka spruce, selected to be free of knots. I think any wooden spar maker would make you one if you supplied a pattern.

They are usually referred to as "signal masts" on motor boats. As they are relatively small they can be made of hardwood. Stainless steel is also used sometimes as it does not require any maintenance.

Why not wander around some moorings and see what other boats have? Once you have found a style that you like you could take a few photographs to help you design one for your own boat.
